SARASOTA-The Orioles are facing an early setback as third baseman Jordan Westburg deals with a partially torn Ulnar Collateral Ligament in his right elbow. The team’s president of baseball operations, Mike Elias, confirmed that Westburg is sidelined until at least May 1st.
Westburg recently underwent a platelet-rich-plasma injection in Los Angeles, administered by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, in hopes of speeding up recovery.
Reflecting on the injury, Westburg shared, “It’s been an issue for some years, and it just reached a point where I couldn’t keep going.”
So, what's next for Westburg? The plan is simple: time and rest.
“We’re taking it day by day, hoping the injection does its job,” he explained. If adjustments are needed, they’ll pivot accordingly.
Initially, Westburg was set to miss the start of the Grapefruit League due to a right oblique injury. As he was recovering, elbow pain emerged, adding to his frustration.
“You can imagine how disappointing this is,” Westburg admitted. “I felt I was doing everything right, but these setbacks keep happening.”
Injuries have been a recurring theme for Westburg. Back in 2024, he missed time after breaking his right hand from a pitch. Last season, hamstring and ankle injuries kept him on the injured list twice.
Determined to return stronger, Westburg plans to seek additional support. “Injuries are part of the game, and I’m staying positive, taking it one day at a time,” he said.
While he’s confident in his ability to bounce back, the mental toll is undeniable. “I’d like to say I’m extremely confident, but it wears on you,” he confessed. He’s exploring ways to better protect his body moving forward.
Despite the setbacks, Westburg remains optimistic about the team’s depth. He believes players like Blaze Alexander and Jeremiah Jackson will step up in his absence. Meanwhile, second baseman Jackson Holliday is also out early this season following wrist surgery.
“Those guys are incredibly talented and great to have around,” Westburg praised. “Someone will rise to the occasion, and I hope to join them soon, ready to contribute in any role needed.”
