As spring training unfolds, Baltimore Orioles fans are keeping a close eye on Jackson Holliday, who recently suffered a broken hamate bone in his right hand. The big question looming over Camden Yards is whether Holliday will be ready for Opening Day. While the team hasn't made an official call, the 22-year-old second baseman is cautiously optimistic about his recovery.
In a candid chat on “Foul Territory,” Holliday shared that he's uncertain about his Opening Day prospects. "I'm not 100% sure," he said.
"Opening Day is coming up quick… Most likely no. My goal is to try to be ready and be in a position to be ready.
But the most important part is to be healthy, and when I do roll back out there, it's 100% ready to go out there and be the best I can be."
The silver lining for Orioles fans is that Holliday's absence might be brief. Expectations are that he'll return by mid-April, minimizing the games he might miss. There's even a chance he could sidestep a stint on the injured list, but the Orioles' management will make that call as the season kicks off.
Entering his third season, Holliday is poised for another leap forward. Last year, he showed significant growth from his rookie season, and another step up could solidify his reputation as one of the league's top second basemen.
In 2025, Holliday posted a .242 batting average with a .314 on-base percentage, racking up 142 hits, 17 home runs, 55 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases. Once back on the field, he'll be eager to improve on those numbers.
