The Minnesota Twins had a short-lived roster boost for the Field of Dreams Game, and the numbers game hit catcher Alex Jackson on the way back down.
Minnesota and the Philadelphia Phillies were each allowed to carry 27 players for the game in Iowa. But once the special event was over, both clubs had to trim back to 26, and the Twins made their move by designating Jackson for assignment, according to The Athletic’s Dan Hayes.
Jackson’s spot became expendable because he is out of options, which meant Minnesota had to remove him from the 40-man roster to get him off the big-league club. As Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumors put it, "That squeezed Jackson, who is out of options and therefore needs to be dropped from the 40-man to take him off the big-league club," Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumors wrote. "He has felt superfluous on this roster for a month, making him an unsurprising cut."
The Twins brought Jackson up when Ryan Jeffers landed on the injured list with a broken hamate bone. In that stretch, Jackson got into 29 major league games and hit .303/.333/.409 with one home run, five RBIs and a .742 OPS.
For his career, Jackson has hit .174 with 12 home runs and a .557 OPS in 189 games across six different teams, including a stint with the Baltimore Orioles last season.
With Jeffers back, Minnesota will move forward with Jeffers and Victor Caratini as its catching pair while the club keeps pushing toward the postseason.
