Steven Pearl Thinks Auburn Is Ahead Of Schedule For One Reason

Amidst roster upheaval and coaching shifts, Auburn's basketball team is forging new connections with fresh talent, foreshadowing a hopeful resurgence.

Auburn’s 2026 basketball roster looks nothing like the one that just went through the grind of last season, and Steven Pearl says that’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, he believes the Tigers are already showing a level of chemistry that stands out.

“Compared to years we’ve had in the past, this group is really connected,” Pearl said. “Now, we haven’t had any adversity. But up to this point, this team has probably spent more time with each other than any team we’ve had in a while, which was probably something we were missing last year.”

That’s a notable development for a team that is once again in major transition. Auburn is only set to bring back two starters from last year’s roster: Tahaad Pettiford and NIT Most Outstanding Player Kevin Overton. After a 2024 Final Four run and a 2025 NIT run, the Tigers are rebuilding around a fresh group of newcomers.

Pearl and Auburn have attacked the roster overhaul with a heavy focus on size and versatility. The additions include center Narcisse Ngoy from France, guard Mantas Rubštavičius from Lithuania, center Bukky Oboye from Santa Clara, forward Owen Freeman from Creighton, forward Thomas Dowd from Troy, forward Adam Olsen from South Alabama and combo guard George Kimble III from Vanderbilt.

With that many new pieces coming from that many different places, the assumption would be that this group needs plenty of time to settle in. Pearl says the early signs have been encouraging anyway.

“You’ve seen some progression of guys making improvements, and a different guy plays well every week, which is encouraging,” he said. “But you really won’t know anything until you go out there and play against other competition. So far, our guys have had a good summer to this point.”

That context matters after last season’s upheaval, which included the surprise retirement of Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl. Steven Pearl had to step in and work with a Final Four roster that had been gutted, and the Tigers never had the kind of runway this group has now.

There are still plenty of questions to answer, and Auburn won’t get those answers until the team takes the floor together later this year. But for now, the early read from Pearl is clear: this roster is already further along in its connection than he expected.

Auburn Just Got A Huge 2026 Boost On The Edge

Auburns edge group got a notable lift for 2026 with Chris Murray set to be back in the mix after his first season on the Plains. The veteran pass rusher arrived at Auburn before the 2025 season after stops at TCU and Sam Houston State, and his experience already gives the Tigers a more seasoned option on the defensive front than most teams can count on this far out.

Murrays return matters because Auburn is still sorting out how its defensive line rotation will look next season, and he brings a blend of experience and versatility that should help stabilize that group. Even with injuries complicating parts of his college path, he is expected to be a meaningful piece for Auburn again, with the possibility of lining up in more than one spot depending on how the staff wants to deploy him. Auburns 2026 Backfield Could Be The Offenses Biggest Strength

Auburns backfield is shaping up as one of the more intriguing parts of the offense heading into 2026, with the Tigers blending proven returners and fresh transfers into what should be a deep rotation. Jeremiah Cobb is back, Byrum Brown is in the mix, and Bryson Washington arrives as part of a group that gives Auburn multiple runners with starting experience and a chance to keep defenses guessing all season.

The early test will come fast, with Baylor on the opener and no real runway for the Tigers to sort things out later. Auburn plans to evaluate the running backs before SEC play, and the presence of Washington, Nykahi Davenport and Tae Meadows gives the staff options if the rotation needs to settle into a different shape than expected. Auburn Fans Have Seen This Cam Newton Story Before

A red card in a World Cup match can change the mood around a team in a hurry, and the U.S. found itself dealing with that kind of uncertainty after its top attacking threat was sent off against Bosnia. The initial suspension carried obvious weight with a knockout stage game looming, leaving the Americans to sort through a tense few days as they prepared for the next round.

For Auburn fans, the broader feeling may have sounded familiar long before the details settled in. They have seen a high-profile eligibility scare turn into a reprieve before, and this one came with the same kind of waiting game attached to a big moment on the schedule. The opponent in the round of 16 only added to the stakes, because the difference between missing out and being available again can reshape everything. [Read more 🡒]
