Rhett Lashlee Lands No 2 Coaching Ranking

Rhett Lashlee's remarkable rise at SMU has propelled him to a top spot among the head coaches of the 2020s, hinting at a promising future return to the SEC.

Rhett Lashlee has emerged as a standout figure among Gus Malzahn-era Auburn Tigers play-callers, carving out an impressive career trajectory. Currently at the helm of the SMU Mustangs, Lashlee has been recognized as the No. 2 head coach of the 2020s, according to ESPN's Bill Connelly.

Connelly's coach rating is a detailed metric, with 60% based on a team's performance against a 20-year baseline and 40% from the raw SP+ rating. Lashlee's success at SMU is noteworthy, with the Mustangs consistently ranking between 12th and 24th in SP+ over the past three seasons. This is a remarkable feat for a program that hadn't cracked the top 25 since 1984 and had averaged an 88.0 ranking since their return from the death penalty in 1989.

While seeing Lashlee in the second spot might surprise some, his accomplishments at SMU justify the ranking. Only Curt Cignetti of the Indiana Hoosiers edged him out for the top spot.

Other notable coaches in the rankings include Kirby Smart of the Georgia Bulldogs at No. 4, despite his two titles, and Nick Saban of Alabama, who claimed a championship in 2020. Alabama's defensive coordinator, Kane Wommack, also made the list, reflecting his impact since his time with the South Alabama Jaguars.

Looking ahead, Lashlee's return to the SEC seems almost certain. Despite SMU's potential for significant financial backing from donors, a move to a larger SEC program could be on the horizon if the Mustangs don't make a significant College Football Playoff run soon.

The Arkansas Razorbacks made an attempt to bring him back recently, although they ultimately chose Ryan Silverfield. However, opportunities at programs like Texas or Texas A&M could be enticing.

Additionally, if Mario Cristobal receives an NFL offer he can't refuse, the Miami Hurricanes might become a viable option for Lashlee.
