NC State has landed a major commitment from Gunner Rivers, the talented quarterback and son of NC State legend Philip Rivers. This four-star recruit, ranked No. 42 overall in the 2027 class, is making waves as one of the top 20 commits in Wolfpack history.
Hailing from Fairhope, Alabama, Rivers has been on NC State's radar since he visited during a memorable 42-19 victory over rival North Carolina. His commitment, well ahead of the 2027 National Signing Day, solidifies the Wolfpack's future at quarterback.
Despite interest from programs like Auburn, Boston College, Miami, and South Carolina, Rivers' connection to NC State made it a natural fit. Head coach Dave Doeren extended an offer back in May 2024, recognizing Rivers' potential early on.
Playing under his father at St. Michael, Rivers has been a standout since his freshman year.
His junior season was nothing short of spectacular, with 3,176 passing yards, 46 touchdowns, and only five interceptions. He also showcased his mobility with 196 rushing yards and a score.
Rivers has consistently surpassed 3,000 passing yards each season.
His performance earned him a spot on the ASWA Super All-State team and made him a finalist for the 4A Back of the Year award. Leading St. Michael to a 13-1 record and a state semifinal appearance, Rivers has proven his leadership on the field.
247Sports' Andrew Ivins praises Rivers as a "skilled passer with elite pedigree," highlighting his potential to excel in college and beyond. Known for a unique "shot put-like release," Rivers is already the No. 6-ranked quarterback in his class, with the potential to earn five-star status in his senior year.
Looking ahead, Rivers won't join NC State until the 2027 season, but he could compete for the starting role as a freshman. With current starter CJ Bailey possibly eyeing the NFL Draft, Rivers might step into the spotlight sooner than expected, ready to make his mark on the Wolfpack legacy.
