Khady Leye Ties Career High, But Auburn Stunned by No. 16 Kentucky

Despite Khady Leye's standout performance tying her career high, Auburn's efforts weren't enough to overcome No. 16 Kentucky on a memorable Senior Night.

In a spirited Senior Night showdown at Neville Arena, Auburn put up a valiant fight against No. 16 Kentucky, ultimately falling 63-56.

Khady Leye was a standout, tying her career high with 20 points, while Harissoum Coulibaly chipped in 13. Despite the loss, Auburn's resilience shone through, especially in the way they capitalized on turnovers.

Auburn's defense was tenacious, led by Kaitlyn Duhon's five steals, forcing Kentucky into 17 turnovers. The Tigers' ability to convert these into 15 points was a testament to their gritty play, even as the Wildcats dominated the boards with a 37-26 rebounding edge.

Leye was a force on both ends, grabbing eight rebounds and scoring 16 of her 20 points in the second half. Her offensive prowess, especially against Kentucky's 6-foot-5 defender Clara Strack, was a highlight for Auburn. Coach Larry Vickers praised Leye's development, noting her growing role as an offensive leader.

The game started with Auburn taking an early 2-0 lead, but Kentucky quickly responded with a 10-0 run, thanks to Amelia Hassett's sharp shooting from beyond the arc. Auburn struggled initially, trailing 19-11 after the first quarter, but found their rhythm in a balanced second quarter, entering halftime down 35-27.

Vickers emphasized Auburn's resilience and determination to fight back against Kentucky's size advantage. Leye's strong start to the third quarter brought Auburn within six points, but Kentucky managed to extend their lead with a decisive 6-0 run. Hassett's hot hand continued, pushing the Wildcats' lead to 14 heading into the final quarter.

Despite facing a 19-point deficit early in the fourth, Auburn didn't back down. A late surge, highlighted by an impressive 14-2 run, brought them within seven points by the final buzzer.

The night also celebrated Auburn's seniors-Angena Belloso, Duhon, Ja’Mia Harris, A’riel Jackson, and Mya Petticord-who were honored in a pregame ceremony. Auburn fans set a new attendance record for Neville Arena, showcasing their unwavering support.

As the Tigers (14-15, 3-12) prepare to close out the regular season against Arkansas, they look ahead to the SEC Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina, with hopes of building on their resilient performances.
