In a thrilling opening round of the SEC Tournament at Bridgestone Arena, Kevin Overton delivered a standout performance, guiding Auburn to a commanding 79-61 victory over Mississippi State. Overton's impact was felt on both ends of the court, as he tallied 22 points and played lock-down defense on Josh Hubbard, holding him to a tough 8-of-25 shooting night.
Overton was on fire from beyond the arc, sinking six 3-pointers and contributing five assists, four rebounds, and remarkably, zero turnovers in his 36 minutes of play. His defensive prowess was crucial in neutralizing Hubbard, the SEC's second-leading scorer.
The game saw Auburn trailing by three at halftime, and things looked dicey when they fell behind by eight just 35 seconds into the second half. However, the Tigers roared back with an 8-0 run to level the score at 38-38. Overton then took charge, draining back-to-back 3-pointers that sparked another 8-0 run, forcing Mississippi State to call a timeout with Auburn up 46-40.
KeShawn Murphy added to the momentum, beating the shot clock with a jumper, followed by Overton's fifth 3-pointer, capping a 13-0 surge that pushed Auburn's lead to 51-40. This was part of a dominating 21-2 scoring spree by the Tigers.
Auburn's lead stretched to 12 points after a 3-pointer from Wendell Pettiford and a steal and slam by Elyjah Freeman. Mississippi State responded with a pair of 3-pointers and a three-point play by Hubbard to close the gap to three points.
Pettiford, however, had the answer. He stole the ball and converted a layup, drawing a foul and completing the three-point play to extend Auburn's lead to 59-53 with just over eight minutes left.
Despite missing their next four shots, the Tigers maintained their composure. Hubbard's layup brought Mississippi State within three, but Auburn closed the game on a dominant 19-4 run to seal the win.
Murphy connected with Freeman for a backdoor slam, and Overton found Keyshawn Hall for a transition 3-pointer, pushing the lead to 65-57. Hall's free throws, another Overton 3-pointer, and a Murphy drive completed the game-clinching 8-0 run.
Murphy had started strong, scoring Auburn’s first seven points, but early foul trouble sent him to the bench. Despite this, the Tigers managed to take a 17-12 lead after a 3-pointer from Sebastian Williams-Adams.
Auburn faced a cold spell, going over six minutes without a field goal, allowing Mississippi State to build a 10-point lead late in the first half. However, a 7-0 run, capped by a Pettiford 3-pointer, cut the deficit to 33-30 at halftime.
With this victory, Auburn (17-15, 7-11) advances to face fifth-seeded Tennessee on Thursday at 2 p.m. CT.
The winner will move on to the quarterfinals to take on fourth-seeded Vanderbilt. Auburn fans will be hoping for another stellar performance from Overton as the Tigers look to continue their tournament run.
