Auburn's season has hit a rough patch with four straight losses, and the Tigers are teetering on the edge of the NCAA Tournament bubble. Amidst this turmoil, KeShawn Murphy is heading back to familiar territory: Starkville and Humphrey Coliseum.
After spending his first three seasons at Mississippi State, the Birmingham native will now face his former team wearing Auburn colors. It’s a return that’s bound to stir some emotions for the 6-foot-10 forward.
Before the game, Murphy and the Tigers plan to visit one of his favorite spots in town. "We’re hitting up his favorite hibachi restaurant tonight," Auburn coach Bruce Pearl mentioned, highlighting a moment of comfort and nostalgia for Murphy.
Murphy has been a significant addition to Auburn’s lineup, especially after last year's Final Four appearance. He's averaging 11 points, seven rebounds, and 1.2 assists this season. Murphy's been on a roll, scoring in double digits over the last three games, including a standout 22-point performance in Auburn’s recent loss to Arkansas.
Now, he faces a crucial matchup against his former teammates and coaches, who will be eager to test him on the court. Despite the rivalry, Murphy’s connection to Mississippi State runs deep.
Pearl noted, "Murph wanted to graduate from Mississippi State. It was important to him and his family, and he put a lot of effort into earning that degree."
With his academic promise fulfilled, Murphy is set to take on the Bulldogs, aiming to lead Auburn to a much-needed victory while facing the fans who once cheered for him.
