Auburn’s 44-39 loss to Florida in Saturday’s SEC opener left coach Alex Golesh with a blunt assessment: his team simply didn’t do enough to win.
The Tigers dropped to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play after the setback inside Jordan-Hare Stadium, and Golesh pointed first to a rough opening stretch that put Auburn behind the eight ball early.
He said the first two offensive drives were “abysmal,” and added that the team’s lack of composure in the early going helped create the hole it spent the rest of the night trying to climb out of. Golesh also said this was the first real adversity his team has faced this season.
Florida’s big plays were a major problem on the other side of the ball. Golesh said those explosives hurt Auburn defensively, and he called Florida’s double-pass trick play the “dagger” of the game.
He said the goal defensively was to control Jadan Baugh, but early missed tackles and mistakes kept Auburn from settling in. Florida’s consistency, he added, made life difficult for the Tigers’ defense throughout the night.
Golesh also said Auburn did not run the ball well enough and described the rushing attack as below where the team wanted it to be. On offense, he took responsibility for Byrum Brown’s slow start in the first quarter and said first-down inefficiency hurt the unit overall against Florida.
He said the details were missing on offense and felt Auburn was playing too emotional at the start. Even so, Golesh said there was no finger pointing or division in the locker room after the loss.
He also said Auburn got greedy at times when taking deep shots in key moments. And while he said there were stretches when the Tigers were “as physical as it gets,” there were also times when they did not create knockback. Auburn will host Vanderbilt in its next conference game.
