Gus Malzahn Lands Surprising New CFP Role

Gus Malzahn, with a legacy of leading and innovating in college football, takes on a new role shaping the future of the sport as a member of the CFP Selection Committee.

The College Football Playoff is sticking with its 12-team format for the upcoming season, but there are some intriguing changes to the selection committee lineup. Among the new faces is Gus Malzahn, a name familiar to many college football fans. Malzahn, who guided Auburn to a national championship game appearance back in 2013, brings a wealth of experience to the table.

During his tenure with the Tigers from 2013 to 2020, Malzahn compiled a 68-35 record. His debut season was nothing short of spectacular, although replicating that success proved elusive in subsequent years.

Recently, the College Football Playoff Management Committee announced that Dr. Bryan Maggard, Gus Malzahn, and Jeff Tedford are joining the CFP Selection Committee. Hunter Yurachek is set to return as the selection committee chair for a second consecutive year.

After his Auburn stint, Malzahn took the helm at UCF from 2021 to 2024, achieving a 28-24 record. Last season, he joined Mike Norvell’s staff at Florida State as the offensive coordinator, where he played a key role in crafting the third-best scoring offense in the conference. Although Malzahn announced his retirement from coaching on February 2, his involvement in the sport remains significant with this new role on the committee.

Joining Malzahn in this endeavor are former California coach Jeff Tedford and Dr. Bryan Maggard, adding a diverse range of perspectives to the selection process. With Hunter Yurachek continuing as chair, the committee appears poised for another dynamic season of college football decision-making.
