Hank Brown’s patience finally paid off at Iowa, and the former Auburn quarterback opened the 2026 season as the Hawkeyes’ starter against Northern Illinois.
Brown arrived in Iowa City before the 2025 season after transferring from Auburn, but his first year with the Hawkeyes was quiet. He saw limited action and finished with 107 yards. Rather than head elsewhere after the season, he stayed put, and Iowa handed him the Week 1 job.
Brown made the most of that opportunity early against Northern Illinois, finding Tony Diaz for a first-quarter touchdown to put Iowa on the board.

Brown’s path to this point started long before Iowa. He was a 3-star quarterback in the 2023 class, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and picked Auburn over offers from schools including Illinois, Minnesota, and Pitsburgh among others.
His time with the Tigers never turned into a full-time starting role. Over two seasons at Auburn, Brown totaled 535 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions.
At Iowa, he spent last season in another limited role, but the coaches were convinced by what he showed during the offseason. The Hawkeyes have cycled through quarterback problems for years, and Brown now has a chance to change that conversation. If he plays well, Iowa could emerge as a dark horse team in the B1G.
The challenge gets bigger in Week 2, when Iowa hosts in-state rival Iowa State in the annual Cy-Hawk game.
