Hank Brown’s first road start at Iowa ended with the kind of throw that turns a quarterback into a headline.
The former Auburn QB delivered the game-winning touchdown pass to Reece Vander Zee as time expired, lifting Iowa past Michigan 20-19 in Week 4. Brown finished with 227 passing yards, two touchdown passes and a 21-for-35 line against the Wolverines at the Big House.
For Brown, it marked another big step in a season that has pushed him from a limited role into the center of Iowa’s offense. In 2025, his first season with the Hawkeyes, he logged 34 offensive snaps before this breakthrough. Eighteen of those came against Indiana, while the other 16 came against UAlbany.
That kind of rise looks a lot different from where Brown stood at Auburn. He was part of a 2024 quarterback room that was gone by the 2025 season on the Plains, and his path to this moment has been anything but straightforward.
Brown had actually flashed starting-caliber potential before he ever left Auburn. Tiger fans got their first real look at him during the 2023 Music City Bowl in Nashville, where he came in late and gave them a reason to believe. Auburn lost to Maryland 31-13, but Brown completed 7 of 9 passes for 132 yards in the game at Nissan Stadium.
That showing came after Brown had started against New Mexico and Arkansas during the 2024 season. He was later pulled for Payton Thorne in a 24-14 loss to the Razorbacks that September, and Thorne ultimately won out.
Even so, Brown’s latest performance makes the bigger point hard to miss: the first quarterback Hugh Freeze ever recruited to Auburn is finding his footing somewhere else. After Saturday’s finish against Michigan, he looks like much more than a former Tiger with a fresh start.
If Iowa fans are looking ahead, the next test comes against Ohio State next week. The Buckeyes’ defense has been underwhelming by OSU’s standards, but it will still be the toughest challenge Brown has faced.
For now, though, Brown has the biggest win of his career, and the kind of game-ending throw that changes how people talk about a quarterback.
