Auburn took a hit on the recruiting trail, and the timing makes it hard to ignore.
Four-star defensive lineman Nate Kamba flipped from Auburn to South Carolina, a move that came on the heels of South Carolina’s win over Tennessee and right after DJ Durkin’s defense was shredded by LSU in Week 8. Kamba, who is the No. 28 defensive lineman in the country out of Corvian Community in Charlotte, announced the change with the message, “(All Glory to God) I'm finally home.”
“I've always felt comfortable at South Carolina, and the relationships are so strong," Kamba said of Shane Beamer's coaching staff.
On its own, one recruiting flip doesn’t decide a coach’s fate. But when a defensive loss on the field is followed by a decommitment in the class, it starts to look a lot uglier for Auburn. Flips often come before firings, and the example hanging over this situation is Hugh Freeze.
By the time John Cohen finally moved on from Freeze, Auburn had slipped to No. 32 nationally in the 2026 recruiting rankings. If Durkin keeps losing defensive talent, the message from the trail could become impossible to miss.
There is still a solid foundation in place for the 2027 class. Auburn currently sits at No. 15 overall, and Durkin has blue-chip commitments from cornerback Chance Gilbert, linebacker Isaac McNeil, EDGE James Pace, defensive lineman Donivan Moore, defensive lineman Marquis Evans, EDGE Rion Jackson, linebacker Kareem Palmer, and cornerback Aidyn Wiggins.
So no, the sky isn’t falling yet.
But the next few weeks could say a lot. If Auburn stumbles again against Ole Miss - and the source points to the possibility with Trinidad Chambliss moving the ball the way he has - and the recruiting losses keep piling up, the resemblance to past Auburn coaching turmoil gets harder to dismiss.
The Xavier Atkins suspension and removal already put Durkin in a bad light. According to the source, Alex Golesh had to make the kind of move Durkin had not, and that situation may have traced back to last season. That only adds to the concern around Auburn’s defensive operation.
If Durkin does go, there’s already a name that stands out as the most obvious option to take over: Tim Banks. The former Tennessee defensive coordinator is now Auburn’s safeties coach, and the safety room has been one of the few bright spots on that side of the ball.
Eric Winters made the play that finished off Baylor in Week 1 with a game-winning tackle on a two-point conversion attempt. AnQuon Fegans came up with a key interception in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry upset of Georgia. Sylvester Smith-Reed has been solid at Star, and Champ Anthony has given Auburn a steady veteran presence and versatility.
For now, Durkin is still there. But after Kamba’s flip, Auburn will be watching closely to see whether other defenders follow. That, more than anything else, may tell the story of where this is headed.

Former Auburn Receiver Leaves Fans Worried About What Comes Next
Cam Colemans day against Ole Miss ended abruptly in the early stages of the third quarter, when the Texas wide receiver exited with what appeared to be a shoulder injury. Before leaving, he had hauled in one pass for 12 yards, a small but still meaningful part of Texas passing game before the concern shifted from production to his availability.
Steve Sarkisian did not offer a specific update afterward, but he did signal that the injury did not look good, which is exactly the kind of vague postgame messaging that leaves everyone waiting for more. For Auburn fans keeping tabs on one of their former receivers, the bigger question now is not what Coleman did on that one play, but what comes next for a player whose night ended far too soon. Auburn Players Sounded Off After A Loss That Raised Bigger Concerns
The frustration around Auburns loss to No. 18 LSU was easy to understand after a 38-17 defeat that felt bigger than one bad night. LSU piled up 552 total yards and controlled the game on offense, while Auburn had trouble generating much of anything on the ground and spent too much time protecting quarterback Byrum Brown from a relentless pass rush.
For a team that had been hoping to steady itself in SEC play, the result dropped Auburn to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the league and reopened concerns about how much progress has really been made. The timing only adds to the pressure, with No. 7 Ole Miss next on the schedule and little room for Auburn to let one lopsided home loss turn into something more damaging. [Read more 🡒]
Auburn Fans May Be Blaming The Wrong Side For LSU Collapse
Auburns frustrating season has sent fans looking for someone to blame, and defensive coordinator DJ Durkin has been a frequent target after another rough stretch. But the criticism around the Tigers problems has not been limited to the defense, and the way the offense has sputtered has made it harder to pin the seasons struggles on one side of the ball alone.
Joel Gordons play-calling has come under its own scrutiny as Auburn has dealt with stalled drives and a lack of consistency on offense. The larger picture suggests the Tigers issues are shared, with the defense absorbing plenty of heat while the offense has done little to ease the pressure or change the narrative around the season.
