DaShawn Womack Emerges As Auburn Faces Edge Crisis

DaShawn Womack steps up as a key leader in Auburn's defense, seizing opportunities in the wake of significant roster changes.

Auburn's football program is buzzing with energy as Coach Alex Golesh wraps up the third week of spring practices. With a keen eye for leadership, Golesh has highlighted some standout performers on the Tigers' defense, notably transfer edge rusher Da’Shawn Womack from Ole Miss.

Womack's journey to Auburn is a tale of opportunity and connection. After a solid season at Ole Miss, where he racked up 27 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks, Womack saw Auburn as the perfect next step. His earlier stint at LSU added 21 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks to his resume, showcasing his consistent impact on the field.

Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 265 pounds, Womack hails from Baltimore, Maryland, and was a 5-star recruit from St. Frances Academy.

This school has been a pipeline for Auburn, producing several current defensive players, which undoubtedly influenced Womack's decision to join the Tigers. The presence of former teammates and his high school coach, Wayne Dorsey, now at Auburn, made the transition even more appealing.

Reflecting on his choice, Womack shared, "I saw opportunities opening up with some departures, and having Coach Dorsey here was a big draw. Plus, reuniting with former teammates felt like the right move."

With the departure of Auburn's starting edge rushers, Keldric Faulk and Keyron Crawford, the Tigers needed fresh talent. Womack, along with fellow transfer Nate Johnson, both bring valuable SEC experience to the table.

Womack is not just about stats; he brings a contagious energy to practice. "I always bring the energy on the field," he said.

"I encourage my teammates to match it. It's time to roll, and we need to bring that intensity every day."

Defensive coordinator DJ Durkin sees Womack as an NFL-caliber player, praising his high-energy approach. Womack reciprocates the admiration, saying, "Playing under Durkin is awesome. He fires us up before we hit the field, and I love matching his energy."

As Auburn gears up for the A-Day spring game on April 18, all eyes will be on these emerging leaders. With Womack's dynamic presence, the Tigers are set to make a strong impression.
