Charles Barkley Stuns Fans With Bold Auburn Challenge for High Point

Charles Barkley's strategic push for Auburn to face High Point aims to spotlight lesser-known teams while offering potential gains for both programs.

Charles Barkley issued a bold challenge to the High Point Panthers after their thrilling 83-82 upset over the No. 5-seeded Wisconsin Badgers. During halftime of the Alabama Crimson Tide's game against the Hofstra Pride, Barkley made waves on CBS by announcing, "We’re playing High Point next year. I’m speaking for Auburn."

Barkley, always a champion for the underdogs, emphasized the importance of mid-major programs like High Point getting opportunities against Power Conference teams. He pointed out that Appalachian State and UAB were the most notable non-conference opponents last season.

“I’m telling you all right now, Auburn gonna play High Point next year,” Barkley asserted. “I’m gonna call (Auburn) coach Steve Pearl and AD (John) Cohen. We’re playing High Point next year.”

Barkley was clearly impressed by High Point’s coach, Flynn Clayman, and his passionate post-game remarks. He stressed that big schools should start scheduling more games against these mid-major teams, noting, “The big schools don’t get their schedules held against them."

Why Auburn Scheduling High Point is a Smart Move

Barkley’s idea is strategic. With High Point likely to see players leave through the transfer portal-a common fate for standout mid-majors-scheduling them could benefit Auburn.

Steven Pearl’s first season saw him face top-seeded March Madness teams, resulting in an NIT appearance. Next season, he could claim his team is still facing strong opponents without taking on the absolute best.

Making this an away game adds another layer of intrigue. High Point boasts a beautiful campus in one of North Carolina’s most scenic areas. Perhaps Barkley himself wants to be there for commentary-who could blame him?

By issuing this challenge now, Barkley is capitalizing on High Point’s current momentum. While the Panthers might not be the same next season, Auburn has a chance to be more unified. Barkley’s foresight could set the stage for an exciting matchup and a smart play for Auburn’s schedule.
