Byrum Brown isn’t just looking at Auburn’s new receiver room as a collection of transfers. He sees a group that already knows how to function together, and that familiarity is a big reason he believes the Tigers can hit the ground running in 2026.
On Tuesday at SEC Media Days, Brown laid out why the influx of USF receivers matters so much for Auburn after the program’s sweeping roster change following Hugh Freeze’s firing in 2025. Auburn lost three of the “Freeze Four,” the highly touted receiver group Freeze had recruited to be the future of the passing game, and Alex Golesh moved quickly to rebuild the room early in his tenure.
Golesh, who had been USF’s head coach for the past few seasons, brought five Bulls transfers with him, giving Auburn a receiver group that already understands his system and, just as importantly, already has a built-in connection with Brown.
“It's huge,” he said. “With our guys, you put it anywhere, they go get it.
I mean, they've been working their tails off. They've been in the weight room.
They've been on the JUGS. They're going up watching extra film.
You can tell that they really want it. It's one cohesive unit.
It's not just one guy; it's more than one. So they're bringing others along with it.
And that's building that connection and that trust piece. So that trust from quarterback to wide receiver is huge.”
The transfer haul wasn’t random. Golesh brought over four of USF’s top five receivers in total yards from last season, including the top two.
Keshaun Singleton led the group with 50 catches from Brown for 877 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 17.5 yards per reception. Jeremiah Koger followed with 38 receptions for 597 yards, a 15.7-yard average, and he also finished with eight touchdowns.
Mudia Rueben, who ranked third on the Bulls in receiving production, stayed behind, but Chas Nimrod and Christian Neptune, the WR4 and WR5 by total stats, are now in orange and blue.
Brown singled out Nimrod in particular and said he expects him to top 1,000 receiving yards this season, a mark Auburn hasn’t seen from a receiver since 1999. That kind of confidence says plenty about how deep the quarterback-receiver relationship already is, and it points to a passing game that could be a major piece of Golesh’s offense in 2026.
For Auburn, the appeal is obvious: a group of receivers that already knows the scheme, the staff and each other. That kind of head start has eased concerns about how quickly the transfers will adjust to the SEC, and Brown’s comments only reinforced how high the confidence is around this new-look unit.
