Byrum Brown has spent the first three weeks of Auburn’s season carrying more than his share of the load, and the numbers show it. Through three games, the new Tigers quarterback sits fourth in the SEC in passing yards with 756.
That total puts Brown ahead of names like LSU’s Sam Leavitt, Texas’ Arch Manning and Florida’s Aaron Philo, even though Philo’s team came away with the win against Auburn this past Saturday.
Auburn’s ground game has not given the offense much help early on, especially in the Baylor and Florida games, which has pushed the Tigers to lean heavily on Brown’s right arm. He has come through in key moments, but there are still questions about how steady this offense can be over the rest of the year.
Brown has added 180 rushing yards to go with those 756 passing yards, but the turnover line tells the other side of the story: five touchdown passes and four interceptions so far.
His top targets have been easy to spot. All three of Auburn’s leading receivers are transfers from USF who followed Brown over this offseason. Keshaun Singleton leads the group with 230 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Chas Nimrod has 188 yards and Jeremiah Koger has 148.
True freshman Deshawn Spencer has also worked his way into the mix. Brown has found him enough that Spencer is technically Auburn’s fourth-leading receiver, with five catches for 44 yards and two touchdowns.
There was already plenty of talk this offseason about whether Brown would adjust to the SEC, and his first outing against Florida gave a mixed but encouraging answer. He opened the game with an interception, then settled in and mostly protected the football as Auburn put up 39 points against a strong Florida defense.
That performance came with almost no help from the running game. Brown was Auburn’s top rusher in the game, while RB1 Jeremiah Cobb finished with just nine carries.
Brown’s three passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown were not enough to get Auburn the win over Florida, but the outing still showed what this offense can be when he is driving it. With the toughest stretch of the schedule coming next, that kind of production matters.
