Bruce Pearl Picks One SEC Team Over All Others Midway Through Season

Bruce Pearl weighs in on the SEC race, pointing to a familiar powerhouse with a dominant frontcourt and elite defense as the team to beat.

Bruce Pearl isn’t one to throw around praise lightly-especially not when it comes to SEC rivals. But after watching Florida dismantle Alabama in a 100-77 statement win, the former Auburn coach took to social media to deliver a bold take: the Gators are the best team in the SEC this season.

That’s a strong endorsement, and it’s backed up by more than just a hot shooting night. Florida didn’t just beat Alabama-they overwhelmed them inside.

The Gators poured in 72 points in the paint, the most by any SEC team in a conference game in at least the last 20 years. That kind of interior dominance is rare, and it speaks volumes about how Florida has reshaped its identity this season.

Let’s not forget-this isn’t the same Florida squad that cut down the nets last spring. The Gators lost three senior guards to the NBA, including Walter Clayton Jr. and Alijah Martin, two key pieces from last year’s national title run. But even without that veteran backcourt, Florida has reloaded in a big way.

What’s driving their resurgence? It starts on the glass.

Florida is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation in both offensive and defensive rebounding rate. That’s not just good-it’s elite.

It’s also the foundation of everything they do on both ends of the floor. Second-chance points, transition opportunities, controlling tempo-Florida is dictating games by dominating the boards.

The frontcourt trio of Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon, and Rueben Chinyelu might just be the best in the country. They’re long, physical, and relentless.

Haugh brings versatility, Condon adds toughness and touch, and Chinyelu is a force around the rim. Together, they’re a nightmare matchup for any team that isn’t bringing serious size and effort.

And it’s not just about rebounding. Florida’s defense has taken another step forward.

According to KenPom, the Gators currently rank No. 1 in adjusted defensive efficiency during SEC play. That’s a scary thought considering how good they were defensively last year.

This group is locked in, communicating, rotating, and making life miserable for opposing offenses.

Now, to be fair, Bruce Pearl has some skin in the game. His son, Steven Pearl, is the head coach at Auburn-a team that’s also having a strong start to conference play and even knocked off Florida in Gainesville back on January 24. So Pearl knows what Florida brings to the table, and he’s seen firsthand how dangerous they can be.

Still, there’s a lot of basketball left to be played in the SEC. Texas A&M currently sits atop the standings with a 7-1 record, but the Aggies have a challenging stretch ahead, including matchups against both Alabama and Florida. The race is far from over.

But if Sunday night was any indication, Florida is rounding into form-and fast. They may not have the same backcourt star power as last year, but their frontcourt might be even better. And with the way they’re defending and rebounding, the Gators are once again looking like a team built for March.
