Auburn’s first loss of the Alex Golesh era came with the kind of problems that can sink a team fast in SEC play.
Florida walked into Jordan-Hare Stadium and left with a 44-32 win Saturday night, handing Auburn its first SEC loss of the season and doing it in a game where the Tigers never quite found enough answers on either side of the ball. Auburn fell behind offensively, couldn’t match the Gators’ pace, and ran out of time trying to piece together a comeback.
The biggest issue started up front. Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown was under fire all night, and Florida turned that pressure into seven sacks. Even when Brown escaped and made plays with his legs, finishing with 65 rushing yards, the constant heat made it hard for Auburn to sustain drives once the game tilted.
That’s a problem Auburn can’t afford to carry deeper into SEC play. The Tigers managed only 102 rushing yards, and while Florida’s pace helped turn the game into a track meet, Auburn’s offense still didn’t get the kind of push that has helped Alex Golesh’s teams succeed in the past. Jon Sumrall and his group clearly found a way to disrupt that rhythm.
Florida also controlled the game by controlling the clock. The Gators held the ball for more than 39 minutes, nearly doubling Auburn’s time of possession.
That wasn’t just about long drives; it was about Auburn’s defense failing to get off the field. DJ Durkin’s unit allowed eight third-down conversions, with Florida converting at a 50% clip, and the Gators put together four drives of 11 plays or more, all of them ending in points.
That kind of defensive lapse is a dangerous habit with Tennessee, Georgia, LSU and Ole Miss still ahead on the schedule. Auburn cannot keep letting opponents extend possessions and cash in on them.
Florida’s ground game was the other major difference. Auburn knew it had to contain standout running back Jadan Baugh, but that never happened. The junior gashed the Tigers for 168 yards on 26 carries, averaging 6.2 yards per attempt, and scored three times on runs of two, 33 and 53 yards.
As a team, Florida piled up 243 rushing yards, and Auburn never found a fix for it. Baugh may be “arguably the best running back in the country,” and Auburn won’t face that level of runner every week, but if the Tigers want to stay competitive against elite teams, they’ll need to shut down the ground game much better than they did Saturday night. Durkin will have work to do as the season moves on.
