Auburns Offensive Line Search Could Open The Door For Two Young Linemen

As Auburn's offensive line struggles to find stability, will up-and-comers Zierer and McManus seize the opportunity to secure starting roles?

Auburn’s offensive line has turned into a moving target, and two names still waiting for their shot are Kail Ellis and Deryc Plazz.

Through five games, the Tigers have already used seven different starters up front and gotten meaningful snaps from nine linemen overall. The most noticeable churn has come at guard, where neither of Auburn’s original opening-day starters is still holding down a spot on the interior.

That opened the door for a younger pair against Tennessee and Vanderbilt. True freshman Wilson Zierer and sophomore Akron transfer Kenneth McManus IV were the guards in those games, taking over for Jacob Strand and Cole Skinner, who began the season as the more experienced options.

Ellis and Plazz, though, have remained on the outside of the rotation. Both entered the season viewed as realistic depth pieces, but neither has been able to carve out much of a role.

Ellis saw brief action against Baylor after Strand and Skinner were injured, but he has not played since. Last season, he made two starts at center as a true freshman.

Plazz’s path has been even quieter. The Miami transfer never really broke through there, and while he looked like someone who could make an early impact at Auburn, his only game action so far has come in garbage time against Southern Miss. He had been working with the first-team offensive line throughout spring practice, but that hasn’t translated into steady playing time.

“They’re rolling with the twos,” Auburn head coach Alex Golesh said during Wednesday’s SEC teleconference. “As soon as we feel like, man, those guys give us an advantage that the guys that are playing don’t, then those guys will get an opportunity to play as well.”

Golesh said Ellis has “gotten better and better” and added that “the hope is that he continues to grow.” On Plazz, he pointed to the difference between a strong spring and a more ordinary fall camp.

“Plazz is a guy that that had a really good spring, had just an okay fall camp,” Golesh said. “He continues to be a guy that that we feel like can go in and play for us. We just haven’t had an opportunity to feel like he would give us something yet that the guys that are playing would.”

For now, Auburn’s line remains a problem area as the Tigers near the midpoint of the season. Georgia is next Saturday, and that’s another big ask for a group still searching for stability.

Jackson Arnold Is Giving Auburn Fans An Uncomfortable New Comparison

Jackson Arnolds move to UNLV is starting to look like one of the more notable transfer stories in the sport, and Auburn fans have every reason to notice. Through the first five weeks of the 2026 season, On3 has ranked the former Tigers quarterback as the No. 3 most impactful transfer in college football, a reminder of how quickly a change of scenery can alter the narrative around a player.

Arnold has been productive for the Rebels in a way he never quite managed at Auburn, piling up 1,063 passing yards with eight touchdowns and no interceptions while adding 270 rushing yards and five scores on the ground. UNLV is 3-2, and his early surge has only sharpened the uncomfortable comparison for Auburn supporters who watched his 2025 season in orange and blue end without this kind of efficiency. Auburn Fans Are Split On The Direction John Cohen Is Taking

John Cohens fourth year running Auburn athletics has given fans a pretty clear sense of his priorities, even if they do not all agree with them. He has already overseen multiple coaching hires, including two football coaches, while the department has pushed ahead with facility upgrades and looked for fresh revenue streams, including the decision to move a football game to Atlanta as part of NIL opportunities.

Among Auburn supporters, the reaction has been mixed. Some point to the progress in non-football sports and the fundraising momentum as signs the athletic department is moving in the right direction, while others remain frustrated by the football choices and uneasy about taking games out of state. For a fan base that tends to measure everything through the lens of football, Cohens approach has become one of the more debated topics around the program. [Read more 🡒]

Auburn Just Helped Tennessee Solve A Problem Tigers Fans Know Too Well

Tennessee has settled on George MacIntyre as its starting quarterback for the Week 6 matchup with Arkansas after he stepped in for true freshman Faizon Brandon in the previous game and helped steady the offense. Josh Heupels decision came after MacIntyre directed a winning effort against Auburn, a performance that gave the Volunteers some much-needed clarity at the games most important spot.

The quarterback change would have been the headline on its own, but DeSean Bishop made sure the conversation stayed broad by powering Tennessee on the ground with 220 rushing yards and three touchdowns. For Auburn fans, it was another frustrating reminder of how quickly an opposing offense can find traction, and how hard it can be to stop once the rhythm starts rolling. [Read more 🡒]
