Auburns New-Look Roster Finally Gets Its First Real Test

Auburn's men's basketball team looks to kick off their new season on a high note against Southeastern Louisiana, as they prepare to showcase their potential at Neville Arena.

Auburn finally gets to stop talking about the preseason and start keeping score for real on Wednesday night.

The Tigers open the 2026-27 men’s basketball season at Neville Arena against Southeastern Louisiana, with tipoff set for 7 p.m. CT. There’s no traditional TV channel for the game; it will stream on SEC Network+, with JJ Jackson and Joe Ciampi on the call courtside.

For Auburn, this is the first chance to turn three exhibition games into something that actually counts. Steven Pearl’s team has already had its warmup stretch, and now the focus shifts to a season opener that should, on paper, tilt heavily in the Tigers’ favor. Southeastern Louisiana went 9-22 last season and enters this year ranked No. 266 in the KenPom.

Still, Pearl isn’t treating it like a tune-up. Auburn’s season-opening overtime win over Bethune-Cookman last season is the kind of reminder he wants his group to carry into Wednesday.

“Our guys have to come in with a level of urgency," Pearl said Tuesday. "We’ve got to be prepared for their best shot, understanding that they’re going to be really excited about this one, and we’ve got to match that intensity and match that excitement.”

Auburn’s roster has a different look, but there’s still some familiar firepower at the top. Tahaad Pettiford and Kevin Overton are back from last season’s team, and they’ll be joined by a group of experienced additions that includes Thomas Dowd, Adam Olsen, Bukky Oboye, George Kimble, tall international signee Narcisse Ngoy, and true freshman Caleb Williams.

If Auburn wants to set the tone early, Wednesday is where it starts.

Live radio coverage will be available on the Auburn Sports Network, with Andy Burcham and Randall Dickey on the call from Neville Arena.

Auburn’s full 2026-27 schedule also begins to take shape after the opener. The Tigers host Appalachian State on Nov. 9, then Arizona on Nov. 13 and West Virginia on Nov.

  1. The trip to face either Kansas or UNLV comes Nov. 18, followed by another game on Nov.
  2. Auburn also has nonconference matchups against Lipscomb, Clemson, Eastern Kentucky, Alabama State, Middle Tennessee, Wisconsin, Lehigh and Morgan State before SEC play begins at Texas A&M on Jan.

The league slate includes Tennessee, Georgia, Texas, Ole Miss, LSU, Mississippi State, Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, South Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky and a home finale against Alabama on March 6.

Auburn Senior Leader Sends Strong Message On Alex Golesh

Alex Goleshs first Auburn season has already had the kind of swings that can define a programs mood for months. The Tigers are 4-4 overall and 2-4 in SEC play, and while the win over No. 1 Georgia gave the fan base a real jolt, the last two losses have brought the conversation back to the bigger rebuild underway in year one of Goleshs tenure.

Cody Sigler has emerged as one of the voices trying to steady that process from inside the locker room. The senior defensive lineman, who is in his first year at Auburn, has been openly supportive of Golesh and is helping push the culture the new staff wants to establish, a sign that the buy-in is still there even as the results have been uneven. Auburn Still Has One Troubling Question Up Front

Alex Golesh has already made his imprint on Auburns offensive line in his first season, and the changes have been hard to miss. Several underclassmen got starts in the recent game against Ole Miss, a sign that the Tigers are leaning into youth up front while trying to find a combination that can hold up over the course of a game. Golesh and offensive coordinator Joel Gordon both pointed to stretches of encouraging play, but they also made clear the unit is still a work in progress.

The bigger concern is what happens when the game wears on. Auburn has dealt with depth issues and fatigue late, the kind of problems that can undo otherwise solid series earlier in the afternoon. With Arkansas next on the schedule, the Tigers are hoping those young linemen keep taking steps forward, because the answer up front still feels like one of the more important questions hanging over this team. Arkansas Faces A Defining Auburn Test With Its Season Slipping Away

Road teams have had a habit of spoiling this series since 2021, even as Auburn has still controlled the overall matchup, which gives Saturdays meeting at Jordan-Hare Stadium a little extra edge. It also puts a spotlight on two first-year head coaches trying to steady their programs in a hurry, with Ryan Silverfield bringing a 3-0 edge over Alex Golesh in their head-to-head meetings.

Auburn enters as the favorite, but the bigger backdrop is Arkansas trying to keep its season from sliding any further. The Razorbacks are staring at a very slim path to bowl eligibility, so this is the kind of game that can either buy some breathing room or deepen the frustration around a year that is already hanging by a thread.
