Auburn has found a way to make the first stretch of preseason camp feel a little more like Saturdays in the SEC: referees are already on the field.
Through the Tigers’ first two practices, officials have been present even though players have not yet put on pads. That’s a step beyond the usual scrimmage setting, and head coach Alex Golesh made clear after Wednesday’s practice that he wants practice to carry as much real-game feel as possible.
“There’s so limited opportunities to actual, quote unquote, play football,” Golesh said after Wednesday’s practice. “So, you’re trying to make it as real as you possibly can - for everybody.”
For Auburn’s offense, that starts with the basics. In an up-tempo system, lining up correctly matters, and having officials around helps reinforce those details every rep. On defense, the same idea applies in different ways, whether it’s staying onside or keeping defensive backs from getting too physical in coverage drills.
Golesh also sees the benefit as a built-in check for the coaching staff.
“Like, ‘Man, that’s not a hold.’ No, the SEC official just said it’s a hold.
Let’s coach it the right way,” Golesh said. “Just trying to make it as game-like as you possibly can in the little time you have.”
He even said the referees are getting their own work in.
“They will occasionally get yelled at, just so that they get practice at that,” he said. “And then I get practice at that as well.”
Auburn is still early in camp, but Golesh is already pushing the Tigers toward situational football, and the presence of officials is part of that approach. He doesn’t want to waste any of the limited practice time available, and he’s using every tool he can to get the team ready for live game situations.
