A string of successful early runs seemed to open things up, and that formula could pay off again if Auburn stays committed to Jeremiah Cobb, Omar Mabson and the rest of the backfield.
On defense, Auburn has been flying to the football and finishing plays. The Tigers are closing quickly, playing with speed and force, and making their presence felt when they arrive. There’s been no shortage of defenders working sideline to sideline and making open-field tackles.
The secondary, though, will need to stay sharp. Southern Miss quarterback Ethan Hampton hasn’t been making the kind of throws DJ Lagway did against Auburn, but he has found windows in the defense and completed passes into gaps. That gives the Tigers more chances to clamp down through the air in the second half if they keep tightening up in coverage.
