Auburn’s SEC opener against Florida is drawing a lot more attention than a typical Week 3 conference game, and Josh Pate thinks it could do more than just shape an early-season record. In his view, the winner could leave that matchup “supercharged.”
The setup already has plenty going for it. Auburn is entering 2026 with Alex Golesh as its new head coach, while Florida has turned to Jon Sumrall, who was also a popular candidate for the Tigers’ opening. Both programs are also expected to roll out new quarterbacks, with Auburn hoping Byrum Brown can end its quarterback drought and Florida projected to lean on Aaron Philo, the Georgia Tech transfer.
On paper, it sounds like a meeting of first-year staffs that might not move the larger SEC picture much. Pate doesn’t see it that way.
“With this being in week three, one of them, if they win this game, could enter the next month really, really supercharged,” he said. “If it’s Auburn, especially… If Auburn heads into the Vanderbilt game, at home, 3-0, they’ll be favored… Auburn just started 4-0. That’s what happens.”
That’s the kind of jump he thinks is on the table here: not necessarily playoff positioning in the moment, but a surge that can carry into the next stretch of the season. He called it “a really, really interesting circle game” and labeled both Florida and Auburn “wild card” teams that few will expect to be in the mix, even though each has the kind of baseline talent that could make things uncomfortable if it all comes together.
There’s also a little history in Golesh’s favor. His most recent SEC win came against Florida, in an 18-16 defensive battle last year, a reminder that both coaches have already shown they can survive the tight ones.
For Pate’s scenario to have any real bite, both teams need to arrive in Week 3 undefeated. Florida’s path looks straightforward enough, with Florida Atlantic and Campbell on deck before Auburn. The Tigers, meanwhile, have a bigger hurdle to clear first: Baylor.
Auburn’s 2026 SEC slate is loaded beyond Florida, with Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and more waiting later. But if the Tigers handle Baylor and then knock off the Gators, Pate believes that early push could change the feel of their season in a hurry.
