Auburn will head into Saturday’s SEC opener against Florida with a clear set of captains in place, and the group says plenty about where the Tigers believe this game can be won.
Byrum Brown is front and center again. He’s been named a captain for the third straight matchup, and Auburn is counting on him to look more like the player who was one of the best quarterbacks in football last year than the one who has had an uneven start to this season.
The USF transfer has thrown for 485 yards and two touchdowns so far, but he also had three interceptions against Baylor. He still hasn’t logged a rushing touchdown this year, with his lone run wiped out by a holding penalty against Southern Miss, though he did later answer with a receiving touchdown in that game.
That makes Brown one of the most important figures in this matchup. If he gets rolling and Auburn’s offense starts humming, Florida could have a hard time keeping pace, especially with Auburn’s defense expected to hold its own.
Tight end Terrance Johnson is also among the captains, and there’s a chance his role grows even more on Saturday. Brown has not yet connected on a completion with the fifth-year tight end, but Auburn has already shown this season that it is willing to lean on tight end production.
Johnson brings plenty of experience with him, having spent two years at Texas A&M and two at UNC. His best season came in 2023, when he caught 24 passes for 235 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 9.8 yards per reception.
Another captain is kicker Alex McPherson, whose story has already made him one of the most compelling players on the Plains. He dealt with a severe gastrointestinal issue for most of his 2024 and 2025 seasons, but he’s emerged as one of the best kickers to ever wear orange and blue.
Against Southern Miss last week, he drilled a career-long 55-yard field goal, and he was seen in practice connecting from as far out as 70 yards. In a game many expect to be tight, that kind of leg could matter in a big way.
On defense, Auburn will lean on linebacker Melendez, who has led the unit statistically this season. The sophomore paced the Tigers with 12 tackles against Baylor and has shown a knack for showing up in big moments. That’ll be tested again against Florida’s rushing attack, with Melendez joined by Xavier Atkins, Bryce Deas, Demarcus Riddick and others in trying to stop anything that breaks through the line.
Up front, Auburn’s defensive tackle Sigler gives the Tigers another major piece. PFF’s highest-graded returning SEC defensive tackle, he’ll be especially important against Florida’s volume-heavy run game. Anything that slips past the line will land on the linebackers, but Sigler is the kind of player who doesn’t allow much to get through in the first place.
That puts plenty on his shoulders against Jadan Baugh, a top early pick as a Heisman candidate. If Sigler and the rest of Auburn’s defensive line can establish control early against a Florida rushing attack that has yet to see a Power Four response, the Tigers will like their chances of leaving their home stadium with a win.
