Auburn is leaning on a familiar core and adding a few new faces for Saturday’s SEC opener against Florida.
For the third straight week, head coach Alex Golesh has rolled out a fresh set of game captains, continuing the weekly approach he said he plans to use in his first season on the Plains. This time, the five-man group includes quarterback Byrum Brown and linebacker Elijah Melendez again, along with first-time selections Jake Johnson, Cody Sigler and Alex McPherson.
Brown and Melendez have become the steady names in the mix, each earning captain status for the third week in a row. Brown’s role is the obvious one at quarterback, and he backed it up in Auburn’s 43-8 win over Southern Miss last week, going 18 for 29 for 226 yards and two passing touchdowns while also running for 88 yards.
Melendez, meanwhile, has kept stacking up production and responsibility on the defensive side. Through two games, he leads the SEC with 18 tackles and has added one sack, all while emerging as what Auburn has called the “quarterback of the defense.”
Johnson’s turn as a captain fits with the buzz around him from camp. The tight end was one of the names most often tied to leadership conversations over the offseason, and now he finally gets the captain nod.
He was held without a catch against Southern Miss, but he made an early imprint in Auburn’s season opener against Baylor with three receptions. That was notable in itself, given that Golesh’s offense typically does not lean on tight ends in the passing game.
Sigler’s rise has been quick, too. The defensive lineman transferred from Arkansas State in the offseason and already looks like a voice inside Auburn’s front.
He earned this week’s captaincy after recording a safety against Southern Miss, and his spot in the trenches could matter again against Florida. Auburn’s interior line will be tested, and Sigler could be part of the effort to slow down Gators running back Jaden Baugh.
McPherson rounds out the group and brings a different kind of weight to the title. The kicker is one of the more inspiring stories in college football, and his return to the field has already carried real meaning for Auburn.
Now he’s being recognized as a captain for the first time this season in a game that could come down to the smallest margins. That only adds another layer to a matchup where Auburn fans have already seen a famous finish against Florida, when Wes Byrum delivered the game-winner in the Swamp in 2006.
