Auburn’s defense is walking into Saturday night with a chance to change the whole conversation.
The Tigers have opened the 2026 season with two wins under first-year head coach Alex Golesh, but Florida brings a much bigger measuring stick to Jordan-Hare Stadium. Auburn will host the Gators there for the first time since 2011, and with both programs in year-one rebuilds after offseason coaching changes, this is the kind of SEC game that can reveal a lot in a hurry.
Florida has drawn plenty of the early praise, largely because of the talent many analysts believe it carries into this matchup. CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer singled out the Gators’ backfield as the biggest reason for confidence in Florida.
"This should be one of the SEC's most competitive games of the weekend, and the right team is favored here since the Gators have the best player on the field - running back Jadan Baugh," CBS Sports' Chris Hummer said. "The junior is averaging 10.6 yards per carry and has five touchdowns with consecutive 100-yard outings. Give him No. 3 in Week 3."
That’s the challenge for Auburn: slow down a runner who has been ripping through defenses, and do it with a unit that has looked sharp against the run through two games. Auburn’s defense is 23rd nationally in rushing defense, has not given up a rushing touchdown, and hasn’t allowed a run longer than 12 yards. Opponents have managed just 153 rushing yards against the Tigers and only 2.2 yards per carry.
SEC Now’s Dari Nowkhah pointed to the same basic formula for both teams - defense and turnovers.
“I think it’s intriguing,” he said. “Florida put on a show last week… You see Auburn, Alex Golesh bringing in that same go-go type of offense, Byrum Brown really explosive, Chas Nimrod can blow the top off the defense. Which defense can create the most takeaways, and then which one can contain the other team’s explosiveness, I think, is the keys to victory for each one of those teams.”
Auburn has at least seen something close to a real test already, with Baylor on the schedule earlier this season. Florida, meanwhile, has only played Florida Atlantic and Campbell, which leaves some room for skepticism around the Gators’ early surge.
Now comes the game that can either validate the hype or trim it back. Auburn’s defense has the chance to be the difference when the teams kick off Saturday at 6 p.m. on ESPN.
