Auburn’s defense has a chance to reset the conversation against Vanderbilt, and three Tigers stand out as the players most likely to swing the matchup.
The first name is Melendez, who has become the centerpiece of the defense’s production early on. After adding significant bulk during the offseason, he has put together a breakout sophomore season and is filling up the stat sheet across the board.
Melendez leads Auburn in tackles, solo tackles, pass deflections, and is tied for the team lead in sacks with two. He’s been effective in every phase, which makes him a serious problem for Vanderbilt.
Up front, Sigler gives Auburn a chance to smother the Commodores’ ground game before it gets rolling. Vanderbilt’s rushing production has been limited this season, with Sedrick Alexander accounting for all of the team’s notable output and totaling 152 yards so far.
If Sigler and the rest of the defensive line can force the Commodores away from the run, that would put more on the shoulders of true freshman quarterback Jared Curtis. From there, Auburn can turn up the pressure, and that is a difficult spot for a young quarterback to survive.
The back end matters just as much, and Winters is the leader there. If Auburn forces Vanderbilt to lean on Curtis, the Tigers’ secondary will have to handle a receiving group with real talent, especially Junior Sherrill.
Sherrill was a major factor in Vanderbilt’s near-loss to NC State last week, catching six passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 18 yards per reception. Auburn’s chances rise sharply if Winters and the secondary can keep him contained.
The Tigers were sloppy against Florida, but several defenders still made plays when it counted. Against Vanderbilt, Auburn will need that same kind of response if it wants to make life miserable for Curtis and the Commodores.
