Auburn walked into Saturday night with one coaching search behind it and another painful reminder in front of it.
Florida’s 44-39 win at Jordan-Hare didn’t just hand the Tigers a loss. It put Jon Sumrall’s fast start in the SEC right next to Auburn’s decision to hire Alex Golesh, and the contrast was hard to miss.
Auburn had zeroed in on Sumrall after firing Hugh Freeze, but Sumrall wanted to do things his way and Auburn’s boosters preferred interim coach DJ Durkin. Sumrall ended up at Florida, and the Tigers are left wondering what might have been.
The answer, at least in this game, was plain enough. Auburn passed on the better fit, and Sumrall made sure everybody knew it.
His Gators barely had to punt all night. Florida went nearly the entire game without sending the ball away, and the only time Sumrall gave up a possession came in the fourth quarter after the game was already out of hand and a delay of game penalty had been called. That kind of control in an SEC debut is exactly the sort of statement Auburn did not want to watch from across the field.
Florida’s offense looked sharp from start to finish, with play-calling from Buster Faulkner helping the Gators pile up nearly 500 yards despite 16 penalties on the road. The run game was a problem for Auburn all night, too. Florida’s three running backs were all more productive than Jeremiah Cobb, and the Gators finished with 243 rushing yards to Auburn’s 102.
Auburn’s defense, the unit that was supposed to be the backbone, never found a way to take the game back. The Tigers didn’t get a stop until it was too late, and the performance made the choice to pass on Sumrall feel even worse. Florida also picked up its first victory at Jordan-Hare since 1999.
Golesh didn’t sugarcoat what he saw. “I understand the assignment,” Golesh said. “It wasn’t good enough.”
He also called Auburn’s first three offensive drives “abysmal.” Those early possessions mattered, because once they went nowhere, Auburn’s home-field edge vanished. The Tigers did show some fight and had moments against a good team, but the comeback never fully formed.
Golesh had talked boldly when he was introduced, saying Auburn was going to “run the piss” out of the ball. That hasn’t happened yet. Auburn’s ground game came up short again, and the Tigers’ top ball carrier, Jeremiah Cobb, was outpaced by Florida’s backs.
For Auburn, the night had the feel of a missed opportunity stretching beyond one game. Sumrall has already made his mark in the SEC, and Golesh is still searching for answers. That gap is what stings most in the aftermath of a 44-39 loss that will hang around for a long time.
