New Auburn head coach Alex Golesh hasn’t wasted any time putting his stamp on the program. In just a few short weeks, he’s been busy building out his staff on the Plains, and the latest reported addition brings another dose of experience and familiarity with big-time college football.
According to multiple sources, including CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Golesh is expected to hire current Howard University head coach Larry Scott as Auburn’s new tight ends coach. It’s a move that adds nearly two decades of Division I coaching experience to the Tigers’ sideline-and one that could pay immediate dividends for Auburn’s offense.
Scott, who has led Howard for the past six seasons, is no stranger to the Power 4 landscape. Before his time with the Bison, he held key roles at Florida, Tennessee, and Miami, including multiple stints as a tight ends coach. And perhaps most notably, during his time at Florida from 2018 to 2019, Scott coached Kyle Pitts-yes, that Kyle Pitts-the All-American who went on to become a top-five NFL Draft pick and a rising star with the Atlanta Falcons.
But Pitts isn’t the only name on Scott’s résumé. Throughout his career, he’s developed a reputation for identifying and molding tight end talent, with several of his former players making the leap to the NFL. His ability to coach the position at a high level, paired with his recruiting chops and familiarity with the Southeastern footprint, makes him a strong fit for what Golesh is trying to build at Auburn.
Scott’s 23-37 record at Howard doesn’t tell the full story. He took over a program in transition and helped steady the ship, bringing structure and leadership to a team that needed both. Now, stepping back into a position-specific role, he’ll be able to focus on what he does best-developing talent and elevating the performance of a key unit in Auburn’s offense.
For Golesh, who comes from a background of explosive offenses and creative scheming, having a tight ends coach with Scott’s experience is a valuable asset. Whether it’s helping with run-blocking schemes, route concepts, or red zone mismatches, Scott knows how to get production out of the tight end position-and he’s done it at the highest levels of college football.
As Auburn continues to reshape its identity under Golesh, the addition of Larry Scott signals a clear commitment to surrounding the program with proven, battle-tested coaches. It’s another strategic hire that blends experience, recruiting reach, and position-specific expertise-exactly the kind of combination that can help turn things around on the Plains.
