Auburn's new era under head coach Alex Golesh is starting to take shape - and it’s doing so with a familiar face to SEC fans joining the fold. According to multiple reports, Golesh is bringing in former Howard head coach Larry Scott to serve as Auburn’s new tight ends coach. It’s a move that signals both experience and continuity as Golesh finalizes his on-field staff.
Scott steps into the role previously held by Ben Aigamaua, who coached tight ends for all three seasons under Hugh Freeze. While Aigamaua helped develop the position during his tenure, Scott brings a different kind of résumé - one that blends head coaching experience with deep SEC roots.
Scott spent the last five seasons leading Howard, where he went 23-37 overall. That record doesn’t tell the full story, though. Under his leadership, the Bison captured back-to-back MEAC titles in 2022 and 2023 - a testament to the program-building chops he brings with him to the Plains.
Before taking over at Howard, Scott was no stranger to the SEC grind. He coached at both Florida and Tennessee, including a notable stint working with tight end Kyle Pitts at Florida - a name that still echoes in NFL conversations. In 2017, he also served as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator, giving him a broader offensive lens that could prove valuable on Golesh’s staff.
Across a 19-year college coaching career, Scott has worn just about every hat you can wear on a football staff. Graduate assistant, offensive line coach, running backs coach, tight ends coach, offensive coordinator, and head coach - he’s done it all. That versatility isn’t just a résumé booster; it’s the kind of experience that helps a staff stay flexible and creative in today’s ever-evolving college game.
For Auburn, this hire isn’t just about filling a spot. It’s about bringing in a coach who knows what it takes to win, has developed talent at the highest level, and understands the demands of SEC football. Golesh is clearly building a staff with a mix of tactical acumen and big-picture leadership - and Larry Scott fits that mold perfectly.
