Auburn Still Has One Big Xavier Atkins Problem Heading Forward

Auburn remains tight-lipped on linebacker Xavier Atkins' mysterious absence following their stunning victory over Georgia.

Auburn still does not have a timeline for Xavier Atkins.

Head coach Alex Golesh said Monday afternoon that there was no update on the status of the All-SEC linebacker, who was unavailable in Auburn’s upset of No. 1 Georgia on Saturday. Golesh said Auburn is still working through the situation, but he does not have an update right now.

“We're still working through it. We're continuing to work through it. I don't have an update right now.”

Atkins was asked about after the Georgia game, and Golesh said Monday that the issue would be revisited this week. “We'll revisit it next week when we meet again on Monday, and [we'll] keep it in house.

And really that'll be the only piece of it that I'll be addressing. He won't be with us this week for the game on Saturday and won't be available, and then we'll revisit early next week when we meet again here.”

Golesh had said on Oct. 12 that Atkins would miss the Georgia game but declined to go into detail on why. He said the issue would be revisited on Monday.

Atkins has been one of Auburn’s most important defenders this season. The first-team All-SEC selection last season has stood out even as Auburn’s defense has struggled. Through five games, Atkins has racked up 45 total tackles, 29 of them solo, to go along with 5 1/2 tackles for loss, three sacks and the third-most solo tackles in Auburn single-season history.

According to Pro Football Focus before the Georgia game, Atkins had the second-most snaps of any Auburn defender with 355, and he was Auburn’s highest graded defensive starter.

Atkins was a star on DJ Durkin’s defense in 2024. He was a second-team All-American and first-team All-SEC pick in his first season at Auburn. He finished that season with 74 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and nine sacks and had the third-most solo tackles in Auburn single-season history.

With Atkins out, Auburn leaned on a linebacker unit led by Elijah Melendez and Bryce Davis, who combined for 15 total tackles in the win over Georgia.

Auburns Georgia Stunner Carried An Emotional Twist Tigers Fans Will Love

Auburns win over No. 1 Georgia in Athens already stood out as one of the seasons biggest shocks, but the finish made it feel even more memorable. The Tigers snapped a long drought with their first victory in Athens since 2005 and their first over Georgia since 2017, and they did it with a last-minute 34-yard field goal that sent the visiting sideline into celebration.

Alex McPherson has been through far more than a pressure kick at the end of a rivalry game. The Auburn kicker battled inflammatory bowel disease and underwent surgery before returning to the field, and head coach Alex Golesh made sure he got the game ball afterward, praising his leadership and perseverance as much as the winning kick itself. Georgia Is Already Answering Auburn's Biggest Rivalry Win

Auburns rivalry win over Georgia on the field may have landed with extra force, but the recruiting battle is already swinging back the other way. Christian Mays, the top-ranked JUCO defensive lineman in the 2027 cycle, officially decommitted from Tennessee and announced his commitment to Georgia on his personal social media account, giving the Bulldogs another highly regarded addition to their front.

Mays currently plays at Northeast Mississippi Community College and brings the kind of profile that can shift an early recruiting board fast. For Auburn, it is another reminder that one big moment in the rivalry does not end the bigger chess match, especially when Georgia is already making its move for one of the cycles most sought-after defensive linemen. Auburn Just Got Snubbed After One Of The SECs Best Wins

Auburns resume got a major boost with its upset of Georgia, and the kind of win that usually changes the conversation around a team in the AP Top 25. Instead, the Week 8 poll left the Tigers on the outside looking in, a decision that only sharpened the debate over how the rankings are weighing head-to-head results, strength of schedule and the weekly churn that comes with the SEC.

From Auburns perspective, the omission feels especially hard to justify when other two-loss league teams remain in the mix. The win in Athens should have carried real poll value, and it leaves the Tigers in the uncomfortable spot of having one of the weeks most impressive results without the ranking that would normally follow it.
