Auburn's Tight Ends Ready to Shock Fans with New Strategies

With a renewed focus and key transfers, Auburn's tight ends face high expectations under new offensive strategist Alex Golesh.

Auburn's tight end situation has been a focal point as they look to revitalize an offense that struggled in 2025. With only one returning player and a history of underperformance, the Tigers knew changes were needed. Injuries plagued veteran Brandon Frazier, leaving the team to rely heavily on Maryland transfer Preston Howard, who had a challenging season with frequent drops and just 10 receptions.

The call for improvement was loud and clear. "We have to get better at tight end," echoed head coach Alex Golesh, who brings a wealth of experience from his 13 years coaching tight ends at programs like Toledo, Illinois, and UCF.

His mission? To transform Auburn's tight end corps into a dynamic force.

To address this, Auburn has brought in a quartet of transfers: Jonathan Echols from USF, Jake Johnson from North Carolina, Arlis Boardingham from Bowling Green, and Hunter Herring from Louisiana Monroe. Golesh, alongside new position coach Larry Scott, is setting high expectations for this group.

"The tight end position is crucial for our offense," Golesh stated. "They play a key role in both the run and pass games. It's a critical group that needs to deliver."

In Golesh's fast-paced, complex offensive scheme, tight ends are essential for creating the one-on-one matchups he loves to exploit. "They're the determining factor for how we line up," quarterback Byrum Brown emphasized, highlighting their importance.

Echols, with three touchdowns last season at USF, offers valuable insight into Golesh's system. However, the rest of the group will need to quickly adapt to the demands placed on them.

"There's a lot on our plate," Johnson remarked. "We have to be locked in to execute everything."

Even seasoned players like Johnson, now in his final season after stints at Texas A&M and North Carolina, find themselves challenged by the new system. Yet, the experience has been rewarding.

"Coach Golesh's energy and attitude are infectious," Johnson shared. "He really brings out the best in us."

With these changes, Auburn hopes to transform their tight end unit into a pivotal part of their offensive resurgence, setting the stage for a season of renewed potential and excitement.
