Auburn’s defense has been the one steady thing in a lot of otherwise frustrating seasons, and Champ Anthony made it clear Tuesday at SEC Media Days why that has been the case. The Tigers’ defensive back pointed straight to DJ Durkin as the driving force behind the unit, crediting the coordinator for keeping the group together through a coaching change and for setting the tone every day.
“It was what everybody thinks it was,” Anthony said. “Coach Durk stayed, so we stayed.
Like, Coach Durk, he’s the heartbeat of our defense. He’s a guy who motivates us day in and day out, no matter what.
He’s the same person; he’s the same man, and you got to commemorate a man like that in college football. You don’t see a lot of real men like that.”
Durkin has been a major figure in Auburn’s program since arriving in 2024, and his influence stretched beyond the defense when he briefly served as the Tigers’ interim head coach after the Freeze firing and before the Golesh hire. Auburn went 1-2 in that stretch, beating Mercer but falling to Vanderbilt and Alabama.
Even so, the Tigers showed enough under Durkin to make the case that he could have been the program’s next full-time head coach. Auburn pushed both Vanderbilt and Alabama to the wire before Golesh was brought in, and one of the new coach’s first priorities was keeping Durkin on staff.
Golesh turned over most of the coaching staff, especially on offense, but Durkin and his defensive group remained in place. That made sense given how well the unit played last season, often propping up an Auburn offense that struggled to keep pace.
Now, with Golesh in charge of the offense, Auburn’s defense is drawing even more attention because of how little concern there is about that side of the ball. That says plenty about what Durkin has built. And if Anthony’s comments are any indication, the players know exactly who deserves the credit.
