Auburn May Have Found The WR Answer It Suddenly Needed

Christian Neptune's standout performance against Ole Miss could shift Auburn's wide receiver strategy for upcoming games.

Christian Neptune’s name hasn’t exactly been front and center in Auburn’s passing game this season, but the wideout made a strong case for a bigger role in Saturday’s 45-15 loss to Ole Miss.

Neptune finished with five catches for 53 yards, and the stat line only tells part of the story. With Jeremiah Koger sidelined, Neptune was on the field for more than just the occasional gadget look. He hauled in every target thrown his way and turned those touches into 46 yards after the catch, giving Auburn a needed spark in a game that never tilted in its favor.

“I’m just trying to do what I can to help this team win, honestly,” Neptune said. “Whether it’s getting the ball in my hands or if I have to block, it’s just little stuff like that. Just trying to stack day to day, but we didn’t get the outcome, so none of that really matters.”

For Auburn, Neptune’s production came in a receiver room that’s been asked to do a lot. He has mostly been deployed for specific play calls and trick plays, and he already has two passing touchdowns this season.

But against Ole Miss, he was more than a specialty piece. He stepped into a larger workload and helped keep starters Chas Nimrod and Keshaun Singleton fresher between drives.

That was a point Auburn coach Alex Golesh made clear after the game. Neptune, who followed Golesh from South Florida, has already shown he can contribute in a bigger way. As a true freshman at South Florida, he caught 38 passes for 335 yards and a touchdown.

“I thought Nep played the most confident and most complete game that he has played both in the blocking side of it and then obviously with the ball in his hands. I thought he looked confident, thought he looked strong.

And he’s played a ton of football. This is a great time for him to feel that way and play that way,” Golesh said.

Golesh also pointed to the wear and tear on Nimrod and Singleton, saying the lack of depth at the position showed up late.

“It was tough not having Jeremiah (Koger) because, it was kind of the same as the conversation on defense. I felt like we played Chas (Nimrod) and KeShaun (Singleton) so many snaps that when we needed them there at the end of the third, got worn down.

And when you play 70 some snaps and only resulting in 15 points, that’s the give and take. Like that’s hard.

If you’re going to play at the tempo which we play, then you got to, those drives got to convert to points. I thought those two guys were a bright spot there for sure.”

Koger was back at practice Monday and will be reevaluated Wednesday as Auburn prepares for Arkansas this weekend.

Auburns Offense Has A Huge November Chance To Change Everything

October left Auburn with plenty to sort through on offense, and the schedule did not do the Tigers any favors. Four top-16 opponents helped explain the grind, but it still was not the kind of production this group expected in the first season under Alex Golesh, even with the upset win over Georgia providing a signature moment along the way.

November now gives Auburn a different kind of test and a different kind of opportunity. The Tigers will see less daunting SEC defenses over the final stretch, and the stakes are clear: a chance to push toward their first bowl bid since 2023 and their first winning record since 2020 if the offense can finally start matching the rest of the season's promise. Auburn Gets A Start Time Fans Have Reason To Dread

Auburns Week 11 trip to Mississippi State now comes with an early alarm clock. The Southeastern Conference announced Saturday that the Tigers will kick off at 11 a.m. CT on Nov. 14 from Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, with the game set for ESPN or ESPN2.

It is the kind of start time fans usually dread for a road game in the SEC, especially with a tough conference matchup on deck and the usual uncertainty that comes with TV selections this far out. The league also laid out the rest of its Week 11 slate, but Auburns focus will be on getting ready for a morning kickoff in Starkville. [Read more 🡒]

Auburn May Have Found An Answer On Its Shaky Offensive Line

Auburns offensive line has been one of the more unsettled parts of the season, so Jacobe Wards first start at right guard against Ole Miss stood out as a notable development. The sophomore had been working in limited action before earning the job after a competition with teammate Cole Skinner, giving the Tigers a new look at a spot that has needed more stability.

Alex Golesh said the lines performance will continue to be evaluated, and Auburn appears likely to keep rotating pieces as the final games of the season play out. For a unit still searching for the right combination, Wards emergence at least gives the staff another option to consider as it tries to settle things down up front. [Read more 🡒]
