Auburn May Have Found A New Answer Up Front

Discover how sophomore defensive lineman Darrion Smith is poised to make a significant impact for Auburns defense this season with his relentless drive and potential for growth.

Darrion Smith didn’t arrive at Auburn with the loudest buzz in the Tigers’ 2025 freshman class, but he made himself worth watching pretty quickly.

The Baltimore native was a four-star recruit by 247Sports, though he came in behind the more heavily hyped in-state defensive linemen Jourdin Crawford and Malik Autry. Smith also brings a different body type to the room. While Crawford and Autry project more as interior linemen, Smith works more on the edge as a defensive end.

That role showed up right away last season. Smith was a rotational piece behind Keldric Faulk, appearing in eight games and finishing with three tackles.

He played 86 snaps as a true freshman, according to Pro Football Focus, and most of that work came as a pass rusher. PFF credited him with seven quarterback pressures, and his best outing came in his college debut against Baylor, when he produced two pressures on just eight snaps and posted an 83.3 pass-rushing grade.

Now the question is how much bigger his part can become in year two. Smith is still working his way into the picture, but Auburn has a clearer path for young defensive ends after Faulk’s move to the NFL. There should be more snaps available, even if the starting job doesn’t open up for Smith right away.

He’ll have to fight for those opportunities. Fellow sophomore Jared Smith is the favorite to start at defensive end, while Ole Miss transfer Da’Shawn Womack could line up there or at buck linebacker. Behind that group, Auburn will also look at Smith and Missouri transfer Nate Johnson as part of the rotation.

The staff clearly still sees something in him. During the spring, Auburn head coach Alex Golesh said, “He’s not there yet, but he’s a guy that’s, day in, day out, earning more and more trust with our staff,” Golesh said. “What makes him really good is he plays with a really high motor and a lot of emotion, and he’s got a chance to help us in a big way.”

Former Auburn Star Cam Coleman Is Suddenly A Must-Watch In 2026

Cam Colemans departure from Auburn already made him one of the more notable names to watch in the transfer cycle, and the former Tigers wideout has quickly carried that buzz into his next stop. A highly ranked recruit who produced in Auburns offense before the coaching changes, Coleman landed at Texas with the kind of reputation that tends to follow a receiver everywhere he goes, especially when a staff is looking to reshape its passing game.

Steve Sarkisian has already singled out Colemans work ethic and overall skill set during spring practices, and that kind of early praise usually matters as much as any recruiting ranking once a player gets on campus. For Auburn fans, it is another reminder of how much talent moved out the door, while for Texas it is a sign that Coleman could become a central piece of a receiving corps trying to take shape well before the 2026 season arrives.
