Auburn got a pair of major preseason nods this week, and both came on the defensive side of the ball.
Athlon Sports named linebacker Xavier Atkins and safety Rayshawn Pleasant to its Preseason All-SEC First Team, a recognition that points directly to what both players did last season. Auburn also landed two more players on the magazine’s list, with Jeremiah Cobb earning third-team honors and offensive lineman Cody Sigler checking in on the fourth team.
Atkins’ selection hardly comes out of nowhere. The transfer linebacker put together a huge year for Auburn, piling up 84 total tackles, 60 solo tackles, 17 tackles for loss, nine sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble reception and an interception. That was a massive leap from the three-tackle season he posted the year before at LSU.
His first season as an SEC starter brought a long list of recognition, too. Atkins picked up Second Team All-America honors, First Team All-SEC honors, a Chuck Bednarik Award Semifinalist nod, Monday Morning QB Birmingham Club’s SEC Most Valuable Lineman, and SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week and Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance against Arkansas. That’s before even getting to the preseason honors he’s already collected for 2026.
Pleasant earned his first-team spot in a different role than the one he usually fills for Auburn. Though he plays safety, Athlon slotted him as a kick returner after a strong season in that phase of the game. He returned 19 kickoffs for 449 yards and one touchdown, and that score came in his first game as a Tiger against Baylor.
Before arriving at Auburn, Pleasant handled both kick returns and safety duties at Tulane under Jon Sumrall. There, he returned 13 kicks for 412 yards and two touchdowns, including a 100-yard return against UAB in 2024.
Cobb’s third-team selection suggests Auburn may have a clear lead option in the backfield this fall, while Sigler’s fourth-team spot gives the Tigers another preseason mention up front after transferring from Arkansas State.
For a program that has been searching for stability, the list gives Auburn some real reason for optimism heading into 2026, especially with Athlon showing confidence in the Tigers’ defense, special teams and offense alike.

Auburns 2026 football slate already looks like the kind of grind that can shape the direction of a program, and ESPNs latest schedule rankings only sharpened that view. The Tigers landed 13th on the networks list of the toughest schedules in the country, a reminder that there will be very little room for a soft landing as the next era gets underway.
For Alex Golesh, it is a first-season test with plenty of built-in pressure, because Auburns schedule is loaded with teams ESPN has among its top 25, including Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, LSU and Ole Miss.
