Auburn Just Gave Georgia Fans A New Reason To Worry About Stockton

Georgia's head coach firmly addresses rumors surrounding Gunner Stockton's health, as the Bulldogs confront new challenges on the field.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart pushed back hard on the idea that quarterback Gunner Stockton took a head injury against Auburn, saying Tuesday that the only issue was the shoulder stinger Stockton suffered on the first play of the game.

Smart said Stockton never showed concussion symptoms after Georgia’s 27-24 loss at Sanford Stadium.

"He has not had any concussion symptoms, so I can only go off what medical people tell me," Smart said on Tuesday during media availability. "I look at him in the eye and talking to him, there was no issue with any of that.

"Now, he did have a stinger in his shoulder. That can affect you.

That's hard. That's what linebackers get.

That's what Ja'Marley got. That's what a lot of players get.

But you bounce back from those quickly. He still did some really good things in the game.

I don't think making it about a head injury when there's no symptoms of that are realistic."

Smart had offered the same explanation right after the game, saying Auburn linebacker Elijah Melendez drove Stockton hard to the ground on a quarterback keeper and that the shoulder issue was the reason for the checks from medical staff.

“He had a stinger in his shoulder, which numbs your shoulder,” Smart said during his postgame presser. “But that happens a lot in football, and you come back from that.

But they were checking him for a concussion and things. They checked him out and brought him back in and said he was cleared.”

Still, the Auburn game gave Georgia plenty to think about beyond the injury discussion. Stockton threw multiple interceptions for the first time in 2026 and also lost the game-sealing fumble in the final minute. A heavy hit clearly shook him, and the Tigers may have shown a path for physical defenses to attack Georgia moving forward.

That came after a week in which the Bulldogs looked like the sport’s most dominant team, fresh off their win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

But against Auburn, Georgia’s offense and defense both showed cracks. Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown delivered what was described as his best performance yet, and Georgia’s ability to handle a dual-threat quarterback looked far less certain than it had against Alabama and Keelon Russell.

The concern now is whether Stockton can be pressured the same way again. Georgia’s battered running back room also may not be in position to take some of that burden off him, and injuries are stacking up on the defensive side as well.

Auburn, in other words, may have handed the rest of the league a clear look at how to bother the Bulldogs.

Auburns 27-24 upset of No. 1 Georgia did more than snap a nine-game losing streak in the rivalry, it gave the program a result that instantly reframes what comes next under Alex Golesh.
