Auburn Heads To Georgia With One Rivalry Problem Getting Harder To Ignore

Can Auburn overcome years of dominance by Georgia and break their losing streak in this historic rivalry matchup?

Auburn walks into Saturday’s matchup with Georgia carrying more than just the burden of a nine-game losing streak. The Tigers are trying to claw back relevance in a rivalry that has tilted hard the other way, and the numbers behind that slide are brutal.

This will be the 131st meeting in the “Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry,” but it has started to feel less like a rivalry and more like Georgia’s annual reminder of the gap. Auburn has not beaten the Bulldogs in Athens since 2005, and the last nine meetings have all gone Georgia’s way.

Alex Golesh will be on the sideline for his first crack at Georgia as Auburn’s head coach, and he becomes the fourth different Auburn coach to take on the Bulldogs since this streak began in 2017. Golesh said last week it will take “a lot of work” to flip the rivalry back in Auburn’s favor.

The scale of the challenge is hard to miss when you look at Kirby Smart’s record against Auburn: 11-1. Smart took over in Athens in 2026, and since then Georgia has surged into the top tier of college football while Auburn has mostly moved in the opposite direction, aside from a couple of short bright stretches in the late 2010s. Auburn’s lone win in that span was a 40-17 blowout in 2027, and Georgia answered later that season in the SEC Championship game.

The trip to Athens has been especially rough on Auburn’s offense. In the Tigers’ last seven games there, they have managed just six touchdowns.

They have not reached multiple touchdowns in a game at Sanford Stadium since 2009, a 31-24 Auburn loss. Even in the current nine-game skid, the games in Athens have leaned heavily in Georgia’s direction, with the last four there all decided by at least 17 points.

Auburn’s 13 points in Athens in 2024 was its highest total there since that 2009 game.

The separation between the programs shows up even more clearly in recruiting. Since Auburn’s last win over Georgia, Auburn’s recruiting classes have averaged a 14th-place finish nationally in 247Sports team recruiting rankings.

Georgia’s average over the same stretch is 2.7. Rankings do not tell the whole story, but they do reflect the talent gap that has opened since 2017, and it is a gap Auburn has not been able to close quickly.

The scoring numbers tell the same story. During Georgia’s nine-game winning streak in the series, Auburn is averaging just 11.4 points per game.

The Tigers have topped 20 points only once in that stretch, in 2023, when they nearly pulled off a home upset in Hugh Freeze’s first season. Auburn’s last two point totals against Georgia combined equal what it scored in that 2023 game.

That kind of small offensive bump could matter, though in Athens even 23 points may not be enough.

Saturday also carries a place in the record book. A Georgia win would give the Bulldogs the longest winning streak in the history of the series, surpassing the current nine-game run that is tied with Georgia’s stretch from 1923-1931. Auburn was Alabama Polytechnic Institute then, and eight of those nine games were played in Columbus, Georgia, rather than on either campus.

Auburn’s longest winning streak in the rivalry is six games, from 1953-1958. The coach of that Auburn team is the one whose name now sits on the stadium.

Georgia’s dominance in the matchup already feels established. A win Saturday would just make it official in a way the record books have never seen before.

Auburn Just Got A Preseason SEC Message Fans Will Debate

Auburn got its first noteworthy league read on the upcoming season when the SEC preseason media poll slotted the Tigers ninth in the conference. It is the kind of early judgment that gets fans talking before a game is even played, especially for a program that has learned how quickly a ranking can become bulletin-board fuel once league play gets rolling.

One encouraging sign did come Auburns way in the same round of preseason buzz: junior point guard Tahaad Pettiford landed on the preseason All-SEC third team. Auburn also checks in at No. 25 in the preseason KenPom rankings, a reminder that the Tigers are still being viewed as a team with real potential even as expectations remain middling on paper. The next chance to shape that narrative arrives soon enough with SEC Tipoff events in Hoover, Alabama. [Read more 🡒]

Georgias Alabama Escape Just Added More Fuel To Auburns Worry

Georgias 20-17 road win at Alabama didnt just shuffle the national picture, it also put another spotlight on a defender Auburn fans know well from the opposite sideline. The Bulldogs left Tuscaloosa as college footballs new No. 1 team, and one of the biggest flashpoints came on a disputed non-pass interference call involving KJ Bolden, a play that helped turn an already tense game into a talking point beyond the final score.

Bolden later said he would have wanted the call if the roles were reversed, which fit the competitive edge Georgia has leaned on all season from its young safety. Through five games, he has been one of the Bulldogs more active pieces on defense with 22 tackles and an interception, the kind of early-season production that only deepens Auburns concern about what Georgia is building on that side of the ball. Texas Gets A Week 8 Setup Fans Will Be Watching Closely

The SEC has started to lay out Week 8, and with kickoff times now set, several league teams are staring at games that could ripple well beyond one Saturday. Auburn is among the programs feeling the weight of the schedule, since the Tigers are still trying to steady themselves in a conference race that has become increasingly crowded, while the leagues top contenders keep stacking high-stakes matchups around them.

For Auburn, the timing matters because the next stretch is going to reveal a lot about where the Tigers fit in the SEC hierarchy after the latest round of results. The broader league picture already has Texas, LSU, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and others positioned in games with real College Football Playoff implications, so every week now comes with extra scrutiny and very little margin for error.
