The second day of the 2026-27 men’s college basketball season may not bring a ranked showdown, but Wednesday still packs a full night of chances to size up familiar programs and a few teams waiting to break through.
Auburn headlines the card with its season opener at home against Southeastern Louisiana at 8 p.m. ET, one of the night’s clearest measuring sticks.
The Tigers have been part of the national conversation for a while now, and this is their first shot to show what the rotation looks like, how the defense is set and whether the offense is ready to click. Southeastern Louisiana, meanwhile, gets an early road swing at an SEC opponent.
Butler also gets going Wednesday, hosting Fairleigh Dickinson at Hinkle Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. ET.
At the same time, Saint Joseph’s welcomes Longwood in another matchup between Division I teams. Both games offer a first look at teams trying to build some early momentum, and both should tell fans something useful before the schedule gets tougher.
Butler’s goal is simple enough: start strong at home. Saint Joseph’s, facing a Longwood program from a Big South conference that has produced several dangerous mid-major teams, gets a test that should be worth watching.
The late-night window brings some of the most intriguing games on the slate. North Dakota State visits Saint Mary’s at 10 p.m.
ET, and Saint Mary’s enters the season with a significant coaching transition after Randy Bennett’s departure. That alone makes the Gaels one of the more interesting teams to track right away.
North Dakota State gives them a Division I opponent that can make the opener meaningful.
Also at 10 p.m. ET, Milwaukee travels to Santa Clara as the Broncos begin their home schedule.
That one adds another chance to see a program that could matter once conference play rolls around. Queens is in the same late window, heading to Loyola Marymount at 10 p.m.
ET after opening with a win over Winthrop.
There’s no shortage of other games sprinkled across the evening, with ESPN+ carrying a big chunk of the action. High Point hosts Maryland Eastern Shore at 7 p.m.
ET, Saint Joseph’s is joined by Longwood in that same window, and Wichita State takes on Cal State Northridge at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Radford visits California at 9 p.m. ET on ACC Network Extra, while Northern Kentucky plays at South Dakota at 8 p.m.
ET, with TV information not confirmed.
The schedule also includes a long list of games against non-Division I opponents, from Framingham State at Dartmouth at 6:30 p.m. ET to Grace at Utah Tech at 9 p.m.
ET. Among the other matchups listed are Concordia Chicago at SIU Edwardsville, Erskine at UNC Asheville, Central College at Drake, Webster at Southeast Missouri State, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods at Southern Indiana and Salish Kootenai at Montana.
Tuesday already gave the opening week a few strong performances from Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia and Arkansas. Wednesday doesn’t have a nationally ranked team on the board, but it still offers a wide-ranging night of basketball, from high-major openers to mid-major games with a little extra bite.

Auburn Senior Leader Sends Strong Message On Alex Golesh
Alex Goleshs first Auburn season has already had the kind of swings that can define a programs mood for months. The Tigers are 4-4 overall and 2-4 in SEC play, and while the win over No. 1 Georgia gave the fan base a real jolt, the last two losses have brought the conversation back to the bigger rebuild underway in year one of Goleshs tenure.
Cody Sigler has emerged as one of the voices trying to steady that process from inside the locker room. The senior defensive lineman, who is in his first year at Auburn, has been openly supportive of Golesh and is helping push the culture the new staff wants to establish, a sign that the buy-in is still there even as the results have been uneven. Auburn Still Has One Troubling Question Up Front
Alex Golesh has already made his imprint on Auburns offensive line in his first season, and the changes have been hard to miss. Several underclassmen got starts in the recent game against Ole Miss, a sign that the Tigers are leaning into youth up front while trying to find a combination that can hold up over the course of a game. Golesh and offensive coordinator Joel Gordon both pointed to stretches of encouraging play, but they also made clear the unit is still a work in progress.
The bigger concern is what happens when the game wears on. Auburn has dealt with depth issues and fatigue late, the kind of problems that can undo otherwise solid series earlier in the afternoon. With Arkansas next on the schedule, the Tigers are hoping those young linemen keep taking steps forward, because the answer up front still feels like one of the more important questions hanging over this team. Arkansas Faces A Defining Auburn Test With Its Season Slipping Away
Road teams have had a habit of spoiling this series since 2021, even as Auburn has still controlled the overall matchup, which gives Saturdays meeting at Jordan-Hare Stadium a little extra edge. It also puts a spotlight on two first-year head coaches trying to steady their programs in a hurry, with Ryan Silverfield bringing a 3-0 edge over Alex Golesh in their head-to-head meetings.
Auburn enters as the favorite, but the bigger backdrop is Arkansas trying to keep its season from sliding any further. The Razorbacks are staring at a very slim path to bowl eligibility, so this is the kind of game that can either buy some breathing room or deepen the frustration around a year that is already hanging by a thread.
