Auburn’s defense already has plenty of established names, but Malik Autry is starting to look like one of the players who could change the conversation in 2026.
The sophomore defensive lineman came to Auburn as a major piece of the 2025 class, ranked as the fifth-best defensive lineman in the country and the third-best prospect in Alabama in his cycle. He stuck with the Tigers through the coaching change instead of heading for the transfer portal, and that decision now looks even bigger for Auburn’s future.
Autry got his feet wet as a true freshman, appearing in nine games and finishing with eight tackles, including five solo. That was only the beginning. With DJ Durkin back on the staff, there’s a real sense that Autry is positioned for a much larger workload on a defense that already ranks among the SEC’s best.
On a recent episode of Locked On Auburn, Darrell Dapprich made it clear he thinks Autry is ready for more.
"I think he's ready to take that next step," Dapprich said. "I think Autry is going to get significant snaps as a backup and can make an impact."
Autry has also done his part to make that leap possible. During spring practice, he talked about trimming down and reshaping his body for a bigger role.
"When I came into college, I was about 338. I'm about 314 now.
I'm just trying to trim up, keep getting stronger, keep getting faster. Just lean out so I can run more and play more snaps."
That 24-pound drop says plenty about where his head is at. He’s not just waiting for an opportunity; he’s working to force one. And having Durkin back, along with defensive line coach Vontrell King-Williams, gives him a familiar setup to keep building.
"Having him back, having somebody who believed in me from the start, somebody who knows what I need to do to help reach my full potential," said Autry. "It's been great. It's a blessing to have him back so he can keep developing me."
Autry may not be the biggest name on Auburn’s defense yet, but he’s clearly on the path to becoming one of its most important breakout players.

Chas Nimrod Suddenly Carries A Huge Auburn Question Into This Season
Chas Nimrod arrives at Auburn with a familiar kind of offseason buzz for a transfer receiver, the sort that follows a player whose next step could reshape an offense. The senior is expected to be moved around the formation, working both outside and in the slot, which gives the Tigers a flexible option as they try to find more juice in the passing game.
Nimrods path back to this point has been part of the story, but so has the fit around him. He is reunited with former South Florida quarterback Byrum Brown, and the two are trying to turn that continuity into production for Auburn. After what Nimrod showed before arriving on the Plains, there is real intrigue in how quickly he can become a featured piece once the season gets rolling. [Read more 🡒]
Auburn Fans Should Keep One Eye On This Overlooked DB Battle
Auburns secondary has enough moving parts that one of the quieter names on the roster is suddenly worth watching. Gavin Jenkins is positioned to get a real look in the cornerback rotation, and with the Tigers carrying depth at the spot, the path to meaningful snaps in 2026 is there if he keeps developing the way the staff expects.
Jenkins already got a taste of game action last season before taking the redshirt route, and now the next step is turning that brief exposure into a larger role. DJ Durkin and DeMarcus Van Dyke should have a hand in that growth, and if Jenkins keeps trending the right way, he could force Auburn to make some decisions about how quickly it wants to lean on him.
