Auburn Faces Its Biggest Proof Game Yet Against LSU

In a week defined by unexpected upsets, pivotal matchups are set to reshape the college football playoff landscape.

Chaos cracked the college football board wide open last week, and Week 8 comes loaded with games that can shake up the playoff race all over again. Five of the top seven AP-ranked teams lost for the first time ever, and now a handful of contenders have to answer the same question: are they really built for the stretch run?

Indiana is one of the teams under the microscope. The Hoosiers’ offense hasn’t looked nearly as dangerous this season, especially against stronger defenses.

Against top-25 scoring units, they’re averaging under 23 points per game. Michigan, meanwhile, has been stout when opponents have to throw the ball.

The Wolverines rank No. 14 in FBS in that area, allowing just 5.8 yards per pass and only seven touchdown passes all season. Coming off a close loss to Ohio State, Indiana is staring at the possibility of a second straight Big Ten defeat, which would not help its playoff case.

Texas is in a far more urgent spot. After losses to Oklahoma and Florida, both unranked, the Longhorns need a win to steady themselves.

Arch Manning has become the center of the conversation, with plenty of people now wondering whether he’s really what he was billed to be. Texas is also expected to be without star edge rusher and college football sack leader Colin Simmons.

Ole Miss brings a vertical passing game and a defense that just held Missouri to 3 points, which makes this one feel dangerous for the Longhorns. Texas is playing for its College Football Playoff life, and a third loss in October would effectively knock it out.

Ole Miss, meanwhile, is aiming to land a fourth Top 25 win.

Auburn’s offense finally showed signs that Alex Golesh’s system is taking hold. Few expected the Tigers to hang with No.

1 Georgia, but after falling behind 14-0, they scored 24 unanswered points and pulled off a road upset. Now they’re back home against LSU, a team with solid defense but questions on the road.

Lane Kiffin is 0-2 on the road after losses to Ole Miss and Kentucky, and if LSU wants to keep its playoff hopes alive, it has to show it can win away from home.

One of the best watch spots of the day is in Salt Lake City, where College GameDay is headed for Utah’s matchup with Houston. The Utes are 6-0 for the first time since 2015 and trying to strengthen their grip on the Big 12 race.

Houston is just a two-point loss to Texas Tech away from being unbeaten, so the Cougars still have plenty on the line as well. A win keeps them in the playoff hunt; a loss could shut that door.

Houston has been one of the country’s most efficient offenses, leading the FBS with a 61.4 percent third down rate and a 54.9 percent offensive success mark. Utah’s defense has been just as sharp, ranking sixth in defensive success rate and No. 1 in preventing zero- or negative-yardage plays.

Two more games deserve attention for similar reasons. BYU at UCF is worth watching to see whether the Cougars get caught in a trap on the road after beating Notre Dame. Tennessee at South Carolina carries the same kind of intrigue after the Vols knocked off Alabama, and the bookies like the Gamecocks’ chances.

Former Auburn Assistant Back In Spotlight After NCAA Tampering Findings

Wes Flanigan, a familiar name to Auburn fans from his time on the Tigers staff, is back in the spotlight after NCAA findings tied to his stint at Ole Miss. Now on Georgia Techs basketball staff, Flanigan was cited for violating tampering rules after impermissibly contacting a players advisor when that player was not in the transfer portal, a reminder of how closely the NCAA is still watching the gray areas around roster movement.

The case also brought penalties for Ole Miss, which was hit for failing to disassociate a booster connected to an earlier football infractions matter, leading to probation and a fine. Flanigans punishment included a two-game suspension, recruiting restrictions and a one-year show cause order, and he served that during the 2024-25 season. [Read more 🡒]

Auburn Fans Need To Prepare For A Very Different LSU Gameday

Auburn is asking fans to brace for a noticeably different game-day feel when LSU comes to Jordan-Hare Stadium, with construction around the venue forcing the athletic department to rethink how people move in and out. Auburn Athletics has rolled out a set of operational changes aimed at improving pedestrian flow and easing congestion, including encouraging fans to use all available entry gates and follow specific routes around the stadium.

The biggest change for many longtime regulars is Tiger Walk, which has been moved to roughly 2.5 hours before kickoff as part of the adjusted pregame routine. The broader backdrop is the Jordan-Hare North Project, a major capital development that started in 2026 and is slated to run through spring 2029, so this is not a one-off inconvenience but the start of a longer stretch of temporary gameday tweaks. Auburn's Georgia Momentum Just Ran Into A Bigger SEC Concern

Auburn came out of its upset over Georgia looking like a team that had finally found some traction, but the mood shifted quickly at Jordan-Hare Stadium. LSU rolled to a 38-17 win and handed the Tigers their largest defeat since earlier in the 2023 season, a jarring setback after a stretch that had begun to suggest Auburn might be turning a corner in SEC play.

The biggest issue was the way LSU moved the ball, especially through the air, as quarterback Sam Leavitt threw for 387 yards and three touchdowns. Auburn had problems on both sides of the ball, struggling to slow the Tigers offense while also finding little rhythm in the run game, and the loss dropped Auburn to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the SEC with more questions than answers than they had after the Georgia win.
