There’s no shortage of theories about what will swing Auburn’s matchup with Florida, but SEC Now’s Dari Nowkhah landed on something a little bigger than one star player.
With the Tigers and Gators set for what’s being billed as one of the SEC’s better games of the year, Nowkhah said the outcome may come down to which defense can force mistakes and which unit can keep the other offense from turning the game into a track meet.
“I think it’s intriguing,” he said. “Florida put on a show last week… You see Auburn, Alex Golesh bringing in that same go-go type of offense, Byrum Brown really explosive, Chas Nimrod can blow the top off the defense. Which defense can create the most takeaways, and then which one can contain the other team’s explosiveness, I think, is the keys to victory for each one of those teams.”
That’s the cleanest way to frame this one. Auburn and Florida both enter with first-year head coaches who came from Group of Six programs, and both teams are carrying season-defining expectations into Jordan-Hare Stadium.
The spotlight is on more than just the coaching matchup, though. Florida running back Jadan Baugh has been floated as a possible difference-maker, while others believe a big night from Byrum Brown could tilt it Auburn’s way.
Nowkhah also pointed to the explosiveness Florida brings on offense, naming Baugh, quarterback Aaron Philo and receivers Vernell Brown III and Dallas Wilson as part of the problem Auburn has to solve.
The Tigers, for their part, have a defense that looks capable of answering the bell. DJ Durkin’s unit has, for the second straight year, shaped up as one of the SEC’s stronger groups, and this game could go a long way toward confirming that reputation.
The turnover numbers, at least on paper, make the matchup interesting. Byrum Brown threw three interceptions against Baylor, the last Power Four opponent he faced, while Aaron Philo has thrown just one interception this season.
Florida’s defense has also been productive, forcing four fumbles and picking off two passes. Auburn has forced one fumble and intercepted three passes.
But there’s an obvious catch when lining those numbers up. Florida’s two games have come against FAU and Campbell, both Group of Six opponents, while Auburn opened against Baylor. The Tigers didn’t leave that game with much to feel good about, but they have at least already been tested against Power Four competition.
That matters here. Florida might come into Jordan-Hare and handle the step up without blinking, or it might need a little time to settle in. If that adjustment shows up, Auburn could find an early edge through defense or turnover margin - exactly the sort of swing Nowkhah believes could decide the night.
