Auburn’s 2027 class could get another boost this weekend, and the name to watch is James Branch.
The three-star safety from St. Frances Academy is set to announce his college decision Saturday at 4 p.m.
CT, with Auburn, Maryland, Stanford and Virginia Tech in the mix. Maryland has long been viewed as the team to beat because of its proximity, but Auburn has a different selling point in DJ Durkin.
Branch’s path to this point has taken a sharp turn over the past few months. He started out as a wide receiver, but when interest was slow to build, St.
Frances coaches pushed him toward a full-time move to safety. That change, by his own account, flipped the script.
"It changed my recruitment big-time," Branch said. "I went from not talking to any coaches to talking to many coaches as the process went on."
The attention followed quickly. Virginia Tech offered in March, Stanford came in with an offer in April, and Auburn jumped in on May 2 after evaluating him during the spring contact period.
At 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, Branch brings a frame that would stand out in the secondary if he lands on The Plains. He’s also another Maryland product Auburn has its eyes on, and the Tigers already have three players from the state committed in the 2027 class: James Pace III, Knyair Crumb and Rion Jackson.
Branch is currently ranked as the No. 12 player in Maryland by 247Sports, and his rise since the position switch has made him one of the more intriguing names in Auburn’s recruiting picture. If he picks Auburn, he would become the 26th commitment in the Tigers’ 2027 class.
That group already includes QB Gary Chatman, RB Myson Johnson-Cook, RB Khamoni Williams, WR Brylan Oduor, WR DeShaun Hall, WR Cedrick Simmons, TE George Lamons, OT Layton Von Brandt, OT Rance Brown, IOL Jaylon Moore, IOL Reed Ramsier, DL Donivan Moore, DL MJ Evans, ED Rion Jackson, ED James Pace III, LB Kareem Palmer, LB Isaac McNeil, CB Nash Johnson III, CB Aidyn Wiggins, S Chance Gilbert, S Knyair Crumb, S Nasir Banks, ATH Preston Williams and K Noah Ash.

Chas Nimrod Suddenly Carries A Huge Auburn Question Into This Season
Chas Nimrod arrives at Auburn with a familiar kind of offseason buzz for a transfer receiver, the sort that follows a player whose next step could reshape an offense. The senior is expected to be moved around the formation, working both outside and in the slot, which gives the Tigers a flexible option as they try to find more juice in the passing game.
Nimrods path back to this point has been part of the story, but so has the fit around him. He is reunited with former South Florida quarterback Byrum Brown, and the two are trying to turn that continuity into production for Auburn. After what Nimrod showed before arriving on the Plains, there is real intrigue in how quickly he can become a featured piece once the season gets rolling. [Read more 🡒]
Auburn Fans May Finally See Malik Autry Become A Real Factor
Malik Autrys first season at Auburn offered just enough to hint at what might be coming next. The defensive lineman got into nine games as a true freshman, and the staff around him has spent the offseason talking like a bigger role is on the horizon. With defensive coordinator DJ Durkin and defensive line coach Vontrell King-Williams both expressing confidence in his development, Autry has become one of those names that keeps coming up when Auburns front is discussed.
Autry has also done his part to make the conversation more interesting by trimming his body and getting himself into better shape for what the Tigers want from him going forward. He stayed put through the coaching change, and that decision now looks even more important as Auburn maps out its defense for 2026. The question is no longer whether he belongs in the mix, but how quickly he can turn that promise into real snaps and a bigger impact. [Read more 🡒]
Auburn Fans Should Keep One Eye On This Overlooked DB Battle
Auburns secondary has enough moving parts that one of the quieter names on the roster is suddenly worth watching. Gavin Jenkins is positioned to get a real look in the cornerback rotation, and with the Tigers carrying depth at the spot, the path to meaningful snaps in 2026 is there if he keeps developing the way the staff expects.
Jenkins already got a taste of game action last season before taking the redshirt route, and now the next step is turning that brief exposure into a larger role. DJ Durkin and DeMarcus Van Dyke should have a hand in that growth, and if Jenkins keeps trending the right way, he could force Auburn to make some decisions about how quickly it wants to lean on him.
