Auburn’s 2027 class could get another boost this weekend, and the name to watch is James Branch.
The three-star safety from St. Frances Academy is set to announce his college decision Saturday at 4 p.m.
CT, with Auburn, Maryland, Stanford and Virginia Tech in the mix. Maryland has long been viewed as the team to beat because of its proximity, but Auburn has a different selling point in DJ Durkin.
Branch’s path to this point has taken a sharp turn over the past few months. He started out as a wide receiver, but when interest was slow to build, St.
Frances coaches pushed him toward a full-time move to safety. That change, by his own account, flipped the script.
"It changed my recruitment big-time," Branch said. "I went from not talking to any coaches to talking to many coaches as the process went on."
The attention followed quickly. Virginia Tech offered in March, Stanford came in with an offer in April, and Auburn jumped in on May 2 after evaluating him during the spring contact period.
At 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, Branch brings a frame that would stand out in the secondary if he lands on The Plains. He’s also another Maryland product Auburn has its eyes on, and the Tigers already have three players from the state committed in the 2027 class: James Pace III, Knyair Crumb and Rion Jackson.
Branch is currently ranked as the No. 12 player in Maryland by 247Sports, and his rise since the position switch has made him one of the more intriguing names in Auburn’s recruiting picture. If he picks Auburn, he would become the 26th commitment in the Tigers’ 2027 class.
