Nehemiah McCary isn’t just a name to remember-he’s a name that’s already making waves. Ranked as the No. 1 linebacker in the country for the class of 2028, the Maplesville standout is turning heads with a rare blend of size, athleticism, and production-and he’s still got two full seasons of high school football ahead of him.
At 6-foot-2.5 and 220 pounds, McCary already looks the part of a Power Five defender, and college programs are taking notice. More than a dozen schools have extended offers, and while he’s a legitimate two-way talent at the high school level, most are targeting him on the defensive side of the ball-where his instincts and physicality shine brightest.
This past Sunday, McCary made the trip to Auburn for the Tigers' junior day, giving him a closer look at a program undergoing a fresh start under new leadership. It was a chance to connect with head coach Alex Golesh, linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler, and the rest of the revamped staff on the Plains. And by all accounts, Auburn made a strong impression.
"It was a fun time," McCary said after the visit. "I really have a good relationship with coach Hutzler.
I just know they would do good for me. I like the coaches and how they interact with the players."
That relationship with Hutzler could be key. McCary’s already proven he can dominate at the high school level-he’s coming off a monster sophomore campaign that ended with a state championship for Maplesville-but now the recruiting process is heating up.
And when it comes to elite prospects like McCary, it’s not just about facilities or hype. It’s about trust, development, and fit.
Auburn’s staff seems to be checking those boxes early. With Golesh bringing a new energy to the program and Hutzler working closely with linebacker targets, the Tigers are clearly making McCary a priority. And if this visit is any indication, the feeling might be mutual.
There’s still a long road ahead in McCary’s recruitment, but one thing is clear: he’s the kind of player who doesn’t just change a defense-he defines it. Auburn’s in the mix, and with McCary’s trajectory only pointing up, expect the competition for his signature to be fierce.
