Auburn Battles Back But Oklahoma Dominates in Five-Inning Showdown

Auburn softball struggles with errors in a tough loss to powerhouse Oklahoma, despite a standout performance from freshman Daigle Wilson.

Auburn Softball Faces Tough Loss Against Oklahoma

In a showdown at Love’s Field, No. 24 Auburn softball (19-10, 2-4 SEC) faced a challenging matchup against No.

6 Oklahoma (28-2, 3-0 SEC), ultimately falling 14-2 in a five-inning contest. The Tigers showed resilience, battling back to tie the game at 2-2 before Oklahoma’s offense took control.

Co-head coach Chris Malveaux reflected on the game, emphasizing the importance of capitalizing on opportunities and maintaining focus. “When you leave the door open for a team in an environment like this, they are going to bust through,” Malveaux noted. Auburn competed hard, but Oklahoma’s strategic pitching adjustments posed challenges that the Tigers struggled to overcome.

Auburn’s offensive highlight came from freshman Daigle Wilson, who made a significant impact with a two-run homer in the third inning, marking her first career SEC start in place of the injured Destiny Rodriguez. This shot tied the game after Oklahoma initially took the lead following an Auburn error.

However, defensive miscues in the third inning allowed Oklahoma to regain momentum, with a two-run double from Kai Minor contributing to a three-run rally. The fourth inning saw Oklahoma’s offense explode with nine runs, including two home runs from Kendall Wells, pushing the game into run-rule territory.

On the mound, Auburn used three pitchers, with redshirt freshman Abby Herndon (4-3) starting and delivering 2.2 innings, matching her season high of three strikeouts.

Looking ahead, Malveaux is focused on upcoming in-state matchups. “We’ve got a couple games this week against in-state teams that want to beat us,” he said. “We’ve got to clean some things up and be ready to compete.”

Game Notes:

  • Auburn has hit at least one home run in four consecutive games, with eleven different Tigers contributing to the tally this season.
  • Daigle Wilson’s home run was her first in collegiate play and marked her second multi-hit game.
  • Abby Herndon matched her career high with three strikeouts, a feat she has achieved in three previous appearances this season.
