Mike Norvell suddenly has a quarterback decision hanging over Florida State, and it could put Ashton Daniels’ place in the lineup on shaky ground.
The issue starts with Thomas Castellanos, who has been trying to find his way back to Tallahassee since December. That effort got a new jolt after every 2022 recruit had eligibility restored if they choose to pursue it, opening the door for FSU to potentially revisit the quarterback it used in 2025.
Castellanos’ return would create an awkward situation for Daniels, the Auburn transfer who won the starting job. Daniels earned that role on merit, and the idea of pulling him out now would only complicate things for a team that already has camp underway.
He came in as a backup, handled that role without complaint, and then played well enough to force his way into the conversation. Auburn fans saw him go 0-3 as a starter, but they also saw him step in and beat Arkansas on the road in relief.
That’s why the possibility of Castellanos reclaiming the spotlight feels so messy. Castellanos had 15 touchdown passes and nine interceptions in 2025, and he was viewed as a receiver by the NFL during the draft process. Bringing him back would mean asking Daniels to step aside for a player who has not been in the system all year.
There’s also no guarantee Castellanos actually returns to Florida State. Per On3’s Pete Nakos, "Hernandez said Castellanos, who went undrafted in April’s NFL draft, is open to a return to college football as a quarterback or athlete. He’s started to receive preliminary interest from a range of schools."
For now, the safer bet is that Norvell sticks with Daniels and lets Castellanos look elsewhere. Daniels was a costly addition for FSU, and moving him back to the bench would be a hard sell. Castellanos, meanwhile, could end up back in a smaller role after his NFL quarterback hopes took a hit.
Norvell has little reason to make a dramatic change this late, especially with his own job security already under pressure. Daniels, at least, can keep preparing as the quarterback Florida State chose, while Castellanos’ future remains unsettled.
