The Alabama Crimson Tide's decision to sidestep a home-and-home series with the Ohio State Buckeyes for the 2027 and 2028 seasons is turning from speculation into reality. Originally set to take place at Ohio State's "Shoe" and then Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium, this matchup has been a topic of much discussion.
Alabama has opted to add the Georgia State Panthers to their 2028 home opener, effectively squeezing out the possibility of facing Ohio State, Oklahoma State, or UT Martin due to the SEC's new nine-game conference format.
It's unlikely Alabama will cancel their game with UT Martin, largely due to ties with quarterback Ty Simpson's recruitment. His father, Jason Simpson, has been with the Skyhawks since 2006, making this game a nod to Martin, Tennessee.
This leaves either the Buckeyes or the Cowboys on the chopping block. Given that Alabama is slated to travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma, in 2028, canceling that game would disrupt their 2029 home schedule.
The notion that Alabama is avoiding the challenge posed by Ohio State is gaining traction. Paul Finebaum hinted at this development, noting concerns from Alabama’s athletic department about the impact of the SEC's expanded schedule.
Alabama fans might deflect by pointing fingers at Auburn, who played the Baylor Bears in a similar situation. However, Auburn's series didn’t include a home game, and their recent Big Ten opponent, Penn State, posed a significant challenge.
Ultimately, Alabama's focus appears to be on preserving their College Football Playoff hopes rather than facing top-tier competition like Ohio State.
