Nets Still Have A Rookie Availability Problem After Hawks Win

With Egor Demin out due to injury, the Brooklyn Nets face challenges in maintaining their offensive performance as they prepare for consecutive matchups.

Egor Demin will sit out again when the Brooklyn Nets face the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, with head coach Jordi Fernandez saying the guard is still working his way back from a right leg bone bruise.

Demin has already missed Brooklyn’s last five games, including Saturday’s 124-121 loss to the Atlanta Hawks. The injury happened in an Oct. 27 defeat to the Boston Celtics at TD Garden, and the Nets said on Oct. 29 that he would be reevaluated in one week. Fernandez said Saturday that the sophomore will be checked again during the team’s off days after the Mavericks game.

“[Egor is] progressing well. He's on the court. He's not going to play today or tomorrow, and then we'll go from there,” Fernandez told the New York Post's Brian Lewis.

Demin’s absence comes after a rocky start to the season. He opened the year averaging 9.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.3 turnovers while shooting 8-of-26 from the field and 6-of-19 from three over Brooklyn’s first three games. Against Boston, he logged 10 minutes before leaving with the leg issue, finishing with two points, one rebound, two assists and one turnover on 1-of-3 shooting and 0-of-2 from deep.

That early stretch looked a lot different from the version of Demin Brooklyn saw in Summer League. The 20-year-old, who entered the season with bigger expectations, had added significant muscle in the offseason and showed a much stronger driving game after posting the NBA’s worst two-point percentage among players 6-foot-8 or taller last season. He converted 22 of 29 two-point attempts across five Summer League games.

This season, though, his scoring profile has leaned back toward the perimeter. In his first four games of the 2026-27 campaign, the BYU product has hit just 3 of 8 two-point attempts and has gone to the line seven times.

Brooklyn could use the help whenever he gets back. The Nets are 25th in offensive rating, and Demin’s return would give that side of the floor a needed lift. His next chance to play would come Wednesday against the New Orleans Pelicans, the second stop on Brooklyn’s four-game road trip.

Mikel Brown Jr. will also be out against Dallas. The rookie point guard remains on a minutes restriction to begin the year and has not been cleared for back-to-backs, according to Fernandez.

Brown played 25 minutes in Saturday’s loss to Atlanta and finished with 13 fourth-quarter points, going 5-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from three after missing his first seven shots. For the season, he has averaged 12.9 points on 34.6 percent shooting from the field and 31.1 percent from three, along with 3.9 assists and 2.1 turnovers in seven games. His 23.2 minutes per game are the fewest among the top six picks from the 2026 draft.

Brown could be back alongside Demin on Wednesday in New Orleans at Smoothie King Center.

Jalen Johnson Could Ease A Hawks Problem That's Getting Harder To Ignore

Jalen Johnson is trending toward a return just when the Hawks need help most in the frontcourt. He is listed as probable for Atlantas game against Brooklyn after missing three games with a left ankle sprain, and his presence would give the Hawks a much-needed boost as they try to steady a rotation that has been thinned by injuries.

Atlanta has been patching together minutes inside, with Jock Landale still sidelined and Asa Newell facing an extended absence, which has pushed rookie Zuby Ejiofor into a bigger role. Johnsons availability does not solve everything, but it at least gives the Hawks a chance to get back some size, versatility and stability in a stretch where that has become harder to find. Trae Youngs Atlanta Return Brought A Reaction Hawks Fans Will Debate

The early-season noise around the Southeast Division has not exactly been kind to Miami, where Andrew Wiggins has gone from a strong preseason to a rough opening stretch that has left him producing career lows in most of the usual categories. The Heat have stumbled out of the gate as a team, and Erik Spoelstra has already acknowledged Wiggins struggles while still making clear he believes the veteran wing can climb out of them.

Elsewhere in the division, Atlanta had its own moment of conversation when Trae Young came back to the city and drew a reaction from the crowd that was impossible to ignore, even if it was not the kind of reception Hawks fans will agree on. The storyline around the Hawks is already branching in a few directions, with rookie Kingston Flemings earning praise for his speed from teammates as the team continues sorting out what this season is going to look like. Hawks Rotation Debate Just Got More Complicated After Trae Youngs Return

Trae Youngs return has already complicated the Hawks rotation choices, and the NBA Cup game against the Wizards only added another layer to the discussion. Atlanta got useful minutes from a few different places, with Dyson Daniels doing a little of everything, Onyeka Okongwu providing a double-double, and the lineup looking anything but settled as the team tried to sort out how its pieces fit together.

Luguentz Dorts night as a starting power forward stood out as one of the more unusual developments, while CJ McCollum had a rough offensive showing off the bench and Newell was unavailable because of an ankle injury. The Hawks still found a way to lean on defense and timely plays in the closing stretch, but the bigger question now is how this rotation looks once everyone is available and the coaching staff has to make even tougher calls.
